Preview: Wins have been at a premium for both the teams in question, however, plenty of eyes will be drawn towards how Southampton fare following a chastening midweek as they prepare to take on a Newcastle outfit which has sustained three consecutive 2-1 defeats here at St James’ Park.

Newcastle – Performances not aligning with results?

Just two teams, both of whom sit at the bottom of the table, have accrued more losses in this season’s Premier League than Newcastle (W6 D4 L12). Steve Bruce’s men were beaten for the 12th occasion on Tuesday, losing to Crystal Palace in what was their third straight 2-1 defeat on Tyneside and their sixth in the last seven league outings. It leaves them eight points clear of the relegation places in 16th.

This latest setback was in spite of taking the lead inside the opening two minutes, seeing more than 60% of the ball, and creating a plethora of goalscoring opportunities that on another day could easily have seen them chalk up a comfortable victory. It was a frustrating result all the same, though, especially after producing arguably their most accomplished display of the campaign beforehand in the 2-0 win at Everton.

Newcastle have now won only once in the league since the middle of December, a run of one win in eleven games (W1 D2 L8), and have done so only three times at St James’ Park in eleven attempts (W3 D2 L6). However, if performances remain at a similar level to how they have been recently, having won the xG battle in each of their previous three contests, then their fortunes should turn around soon enough.

Southampton – Humbled and undermanned?

For the second season running, Southampton (W8 D5 L8) lost 9-0 in the Premier League, this time away to Man Utd. To do so once is traumatic enough but recoverable, as Saints admirably proved last time around when steadying the ship to finish 2019-20 in mid-table after they were beaten 9-0 at home by Leicester. However, to mirror that result, and in such a relatively short space of time, is fairly alarming.

Ironically, after a game in which they allowed the opposition nine goals, it was another limp performance in attack which has me concerned. From looking free-scoring at the start of the campaign to netting just twice across their last eight league games. This is no longer a team playing with any degree of confidence or fluidity. A team with one win in nine (W1 D3 L5) to show for since the middle of December.

Compounding this second recovery effort is an absentee list that continues to swell and now includes suspended duo Alexandre Jankewitz and Jan Bednarek. The latter among their most consistent performers this term. The Polish international will be sorely missed at the back, for a defence which has shipped 15 goals in the four league games since beating reigning champions Liverpool 1-0 at St Mary’s on 4 January.

Newcastle Vs Southampton Betting Advice

Recent performances from Newcastle have belied their woeful recent form, having lost six of their last seven league games despite winning the xG battle in all of the most recent three (beating Everton but losing to Crystal Palace and Leeds). Yet they have now netted in three consecutive matches, with their total of four goals in this period twice that Southampton managed across their last eight fixtures in the competition.

Newcastle Vs Southampton – Key Facts:

  • Neither side secured a positive outcome during the midweek round of Premier League action. Newcastle beaten 2-1 at home by Crystal Palace as Southampton suffered an humiliating 9-0 loss away to Man Utd.
  • Both teams scored in 8 of the 11 league games Newcastle have hosted this term, while Southampton have seen half of their away fixtures deliver goals at both ends.
  • Southampton, 2-0 victors at St Mary’s earlier in the campaign, are winless across four previous visits to St James’ Park having lost each of the last three.

Even though the Saints are currently in the midst of a wretched spell in front of goal, their attackers are too good to carry on like this for too much longer and so I quietly fancy the chances of both teams scoring. Firstly, most league games at St James Park go this way, with 8 of 11 doing so this season. Then there is the pride factor that comes into play, with Newcastle harshly beaten last time and Saints downright humiliated.
