Newport County Prediction

League Two outfit Newport County earned a creditable draw away at Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium when they held Boro to a 1-1 draw, and they now return to home turf where they’ll be looking to repeat their giant-killing act last time out in the cup when they beat Premier League side Leicester city 2-1.

With the Premier League clubs heavily rotating their squads for the FA Cup early rounds and generally abusing the competition it does take a little of the gloss off any wins that a lower league team achieves, but nonetheless, Newport will be keen to boost their finances with a win on Tuesday night.

The hosts come into this cup replay on the back of a heavy 3-0 loss away at Grimsby Town but this is a one-off match for The Exiles and manager Michael Flynn shouldn’t have too much trouble motivating his players for this one.

Newport have had a good run in the FA Cup in recent times as they’ve lost just once in their last 10 ties and that was to Tottenham in February of last year. Forwards Amond (11 goals) and Matt (9 goals) will be eager to upset the form book.

Key-Facts – Newport County v Middlesbrough

  • Newport County have lost just 1 of their last 10 FA Cup ties
  • Middlesbrough have scored in 13 of their 16 away matches to date
  • The winner of this replay will get a home tie against Manchester City

Middlesbrough Prediction

Middlesbrough will make their way down to Wales full of confidence after beating West Brom 3-2 at The Hawthorns as former Baggies manager Tony Pulis got one over one of his employers to move his Boro side level on points with West Brom.

The north-east club will now turn their attentions to the FA Cup and a tricky tie awaits them at Rodney Parade on Tuesday night as the Championship side look to avoid a banana-skin and progress through to the 5th round where the winner of this tie will have a home tie against the mighty Manchester City.

A place in the play-offs in the Championship though is unfortunately likely to mean that Pulis will rotate his side once more with the massively lucrative chance of a shot at the Premier League far outweighing FA Cup success.

That said, the fringe players like Hugill (6 goals) and Fletcher may get a chance to impress here.

Betting Tips Verdict

The lure of a home tie with Manchester City probably attracts Newport County more than Middlesbrough from a purely financial perspective, but i’m expecting both teams to score in what promises to be an interesting reply.
