Australia’s Nick Kyrgios will be looking to thrill the home crowds at Melbourne Park in the second round of the competition. He does face a tricky little match up however as he takes on France’s Gilles Simon.

Kyrgios can win second round duel against tricky French challenger

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios, who has been doing a lot of fundraising for the Australian bushfires, will be looking for safe passage to the third round. For every set he wins at the tournament, he is pledging money to the relief fund for the bushfire disasters.

Krygios opened his first round account with a straight-sets win over Lorenzo Sonego. However, he was challenged in the second and third set, the Australian claiming both of them on a tie-break. So that may just hint towards him potentially dropping a set against a higher-quality opponent.

You really never know what you are going to get from Kyrgios on the court. He’s undoubtedly talented but long-term focus in matches doesn’t always seem to be there. Surprisingly he only made it to the quarter finals in two previous Grand Slam tournaments. One of those was in 2015 at the Australian Open.

He has only been past the third round at Melbourne Park once since then in four attempts, so is unpredictable. There has not been a progression from beyond the fourth round at any of his last fourteen Grand Slam appearances across the board. But still, all things considered this is a winnable match for him.

French veteran can at least take a set off Kyrgios

35 year old Gilles Simon is more of a technically gifted player than one of raw power. He did line up at the Adelaide Open earlier this month but fell in the first round against compatriot Jeremy Chardy. That’s all the action that he had prior to heading over to Melbourne Park.

Simon was a quarter finalist at the 2009 Australian Open, his best ever effort at Melbourne Park. He has bowed out at the second round in each of his last two appearances at the Australian Open. The Frenchman has fallen at that stage in each of his last five Grand Slam appearances as well, so there is a bit of a trend there going against him. He’s not likely to have enough over the course of the match, but could sneak a set against a sometimes-unfocused Kyrgios.

Nick Kyrgios vs Gilles Simon Betting Advice

At the end of the day this should be a routine victory for Kyrgios. His track record at the Slam’s isn’t great however and therefore it may be worth seeing his opponent get a set on the board. The Aussie was made to work very hard for his clean sweep in his first match at the tournament.

Key Facts – Nick Kyrgios vs Gilles Simon Betting Tip

  • Nick Kyrgios won the one previous meeting which was last year in Washington
  • Nick Kyrgios has only made it past the 2nd Rd once in his last three Australian Open campaigns
  • Gilles Simon has lost in the 2nd round in each of his last five Slams

So the 3-1 correct score in set bet in favour of Kyrgios looks to be the way to swing for a bit of a value. When the two met in Washington last year, Kyrgios took the victory but it was a very tight match between them.
