Nimes Preview – Les Crocodiles unable to stem flow of goals?

Four home defeats in five now for Nimes (W3 D2 L7), who haven’t won a Ligue 1 fixture here at Stade des Costieres since pummelling Brest 4-0 on the opening matchday back in August. Those four goals are as many as Jerome Arpinon’s beleaguered side managed across five subsequent games on their own patch, a miserable sequence featuring some truly chastening encounters with PSG (0-4), Rennes (2-4) and even Angers (1-5).

Therefore, the sight of visiting Marseille, boasting away wins in this fixture in each of the past two seasons, is hardly cause for optimism. Only two sides, both of whom reside in the bottom four, have fared worse in home matches thus far. Nobody, meanwhile, is averaging more goals allowed at their own ground: their tally of 15 at least four more than any other team, at a rate of more than two a game.

Last Sunday’s 3-0 loss in Monaco served up the latest horror show from a side which has now slumped to five defeats in their last six Ligue 1 outings. As has often been the case this season, the attack never got going. Nimes generated just 0.25 xG last time out, leaving them with the worst Expected Goals figure (0.8 xG per game) in the French top-flight. Little wonder, then, that four of their last five defeats were to nil.

Marseille 1-0 (Correct Score)

Marseille Preview – Villas-Boas targeting fifth-straight Ligue 1 win?

With PSG so far unsuccessful in dispensing with the chasing pack, there are murmurs that a potential Ligue 1 title race may be about to unfold after three years of Paris dominance. Four clubs currently trail Les Parisiens by two points, but could it be that Andre Villas-Boas and his Marseille (W6 D3 L1) side, second when the 2019/20 season was curtailed, are the ones best equipped to mount a sustained challenge?

L’OM have 21 points through 10 Ligue 1 matches thus far, four points less than PSG who have played two games more. In theory, then, Marseille have performed better than anyone at this stage, and would usurp PSG at the summit should they win their games in hand at home to Lens and Nice. In the meantime, they can climb into second, for 24 hours at least, with a fifth successive league victory on Friday.

It has actually been away from home where Marseille have excelled this season, collecting 13 of 15 available points (W4 D1). The only team to prevent them from winning on their travels so far being Lyon, in a 1-1 draw, with three of four said victories coming by way of a 1-0 scoreline. Furthermore, stretching into last term, this is now the club’s longest unbeaten away run (13 – W10 D3) since January 2008.

Nimes Vs Marseille Betting Advice

The relief was palpable as Marseille ended a 13-match losing streak in the Champions League with a 2-1 victory against Olympiacos at the Stade Velodrome on Tuesday. A thoroughly deserved outcome even if they were on the receiving end of some generous officiating, with Dmitri Payet converting a pair of spot-kicks to break his own duck in the competition. A morale booster all round ahead of Friday’s Ligue 1 return.

Nimes Vs Marseille – Key Facts:

  • Since a 4-0 win against Brest on Matchday 1, Nimes have taken one point from fifteen at home (D1 L4) having lost each of their past three fixtures at Stade des Costieres.
  • Lyon are the only team who have prevented Marseille from winning on their travels this season, with three of four away wins (vs Lorient, PSG & Strasbourg) without conceding.
  • In the four meetings between the sides since the start of 2018/19, Marseille have won three to Nimes‘ one, while there have been, on average, four goals scored per game.

Marseille have won their last four matches in the league and are now unbeaten in seven, having lost once all season. Moreover, this is now their longest away run without losing in more than a decade, winning 10 of 13 since their last such defeat. The visitors should therefore make light work of Nimes, who have lost five out of the last six in Ligue 1 whilst registering one of the last fifteen available points at home.
