It was a triumphant Nations League campaign last time out for Saturday’s hosts, North Macedonia, as they finished top of Group 4 in League D and they accordingly take their place in League C having achieved promotion thanks to that impressive campaign.
North Macedonia finished five points clear of 2nd placed Armenia and also saw off the likes of Gibraltar and Liechtenstein to claim top spot and they’ll no doubt be keen to continue that success into this term.
The hosts also continued this momentum into the Euro qualifiers which brought about a 3rd placed finish in Group G behind Poland and Austria and means they now face Kosovo in a semi-final play-off. As mentioned earlier, Armenia finished runners-up to Saturday’s hosts, North Macedonia, in the first ever Nations League competition in League D and they too have been elevated up to League C for this upcoming campaign where they’ll lock horns with North Macedonia once again.
Victories over Liechtenstein, a 4-0 romp at home against North Macedonia and a 6-2 win in Gibraltar will have been welcome wins for Armenia but their subsequent Euro qualifying campaign resulted in Armenia finishing second from bottom in Group J.
Notable wins against Greece 3-2 away and a 4-2 home win over Bosnia-Herzegovina though were overshadowed by three defeats on the trot in the latter stages of the group matches and put paid to any heroics in qualifying for next year’s tournament, as well as being handed a 9-1 thrashing by Italy!
