Northampton Preview – Cobblers hoping to take first-leg advantage

Northampton Town are a fairly physical side and will be hoping that their conditioning proves crucial in the first leg of their semi-final with Cheltenham.

The Cobblers didn’t always get it right in the regular season but they are a free-scoring side at their best with a host of experienced professionals.

Alan McCormack, Andy Williams and Sam Hoskins have all played at a higher level and defender Scott Wharton has extended his loan from Blackburn until the end of the month so would be eligible to play at Wembley in Northampton progress. Hoskins, however, is suspended for the first leg.

Callum Morton was among the goals for Keith Curle’s team before play was suspended in March and captain Charlie Goode chips in now and again so both could be crucial to Town’s hopes of making progress.

Cheltenham Preview – Robins hoping to pick up where they left off

Cheltenham were one of the form teams in League 2 before play was suspended in March and they will be looking to pick up where they left off at Sixfields.

Michael Duff’s side have won five of their last six matches, with goalkeeper Owen Evans keeping four clean sheets. They would have fancied their chances of closing down the top three had the pandemic not intervened so will be looking for consolation in the play-offs.

The acquisition of Alfie May from Doncaster has been the catalyst for their relative success and he’ll be a handful for the U’s defence alongside the experienced Luke Varney.

Varney scored the winner against Northampton when they last met but is out of contract this summer. Chris Hussey is also playing for his future but Cheltenham will be keen to hang on Ryan Broom.

Trends – Northampton vs Cheltenham Betting Tips

  • Cheltenham have won three of their four matches against Northampton
  • Northampton have only won one of their last eight matches agisnt Cheltenham in all competitions
  • Both teams have scored in seven of the last eight matches between the sides

Cheltenham are strong at home so there is a feeling that Northampton have to win the home leg of their semi-final if they are to stand any chance of making it to Wembley.
However, it’s difficult to see Cheltenham losing if they continue in the same form as they ended the regular season.
