English Premier League
Pick: Everton WIN
Odds: 11/10

Preview: It is beginning to look a little ominous now for Norwich, who continue to occupy last place in the Premier League on account of having lost their past six league games without so much as scoring. Will Sunday’s visit of an Everton side in questionable form of their own, bring about any change in the Canaries’ bleak fortunes?

Norwich City – Relegation already looming large?

Only six teams in the history of the Premier League has ever had fewer points after 20 games than Norwich’s tally of 10, underlining the daunting challenge in front of manager Dean Smith as he desperately strives to keep the club in the top-flight. In truth, they already appear doomed. As while they are only three points from safety, the Canaries have played as many as three games more than the sides above them.

Wednesday’s 2-0 loss at West Ham was an all too familiar outcome. Their sixth consecutive defeat in the league, all to nil, having taken two points from the last 24 available (D2 L6). Meanwhile, not even a return to home comforts at Carrow Road seems likely to inspire them. The Canaries have won one league game at home all season (D2 L7), failing to score in each of the last four since a 2-1 win over Southampton.

Key Stat: More than half (11 of 20) of Norwich’s Premier League games this season have resulted in them being beaten to nil. This includes their last six top-flight matches and each of the last three at Carrow Road.

Everton – Fans still unconvinced by Rafael Benitez?

The Toffees have yet to claim so much as a point against a team from the Championship last season, succumbing to a narrow defeat at Brentford after they were humbled at home by Watford. Saturday’s trip to Norfolk to take on a hapless Norwich should change all that, but then again this is an Everton team with one win in the league since September (D3 L8) and only one on the road all season (W1 D3 L5).

Relief was palpable then as Everton barely avoided losing to Championship side Hull in the FA Cup third round last time out. Andros Townsend’s speculative effort from range settling an absorbing contest in extra-time. Having begun the year losing at home to Brighton, fans would have expected something much more convincing. Though with players gradually returning to fitness, perhaps that will come with more matches.

Key Stat: Across their last seven Premier League away games, Everton have scored four goals and never more than once. This implies a clean sheet on Saturday is pivotal to their chances of picking up three points – however, they haven’t registered a defensive shutout on their last six league visits to Carrow Road.

Norwich Vs Everton Betting Advice

With confidence low in either camp, the safe bet is plumping for the draw. However, none of the last four top-flight meetings between the sides ended all square, with Everton securing all three points in both this season’s clash at Goodison Park and their latest visit to Carrow Road, a 1-0 win in June 2020. In fact, the Toffees have won to nil on three of the last four occasions these teams have met in the Premier League.

Norwich City Vs Everton – Key Facts:

  • After winning 1-0 on their most recent visit to Carrow Road, in June 2020, Everton are aiming for back-to-back away league victories over Norwich for the first time in 33 years.
  • Norwich enter this fixture in dismal form. Dean Smith’s men are coming off sixth successive Premier League defeats, each of them being ‘to nil’.
  • Everton aren’t in much better shape though. The Toffees have one win from their last 12 Premier League fixtures and last won away from home in August (D2 L5 since).

Everton are handed a tentative vote therefore. Rafael Benitez is boosted by the return of several influential players from injury as well, namely dynamic midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure and last season’s top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Should the visitors fail to win, questions will certainly be asked of Benitez. Norwich are ripe for the taking, losing their past six league games and going 540 minutes without a top-flight goal.
