Preview: For the second time in three seasons, newly promoted Norwich City begin a Premier League campaign against Liverpool. Unlike in 2019-20, when they lost 4-1 at Anfield, the Canaries get proceedings underway in front of a home crowd inside Carrow Road.

Norwich City – Championship winners up against it?

For the second time in three seasons, Norwich City earned top-flight promotion on the back of winning the EFL Championship. Manager Daniel Farke deserves immense credit for not only sticking around after overseeing the club’s demotion from the Premier League in 2019-20, but for steering them straight back up in emphatic fashion, finishing comfortably clear of runners-up Watford.

Bettering their dismal points tally from three seasons ago, when accumulating a meagre 21 as they finished 13 points adrift at the bottom of the table, should be a minimum requirement. Several members of that side are still around, including top scorer Teemu Pukki. The Finn found the back of the net 11 times in 26 appearances the last time the Canaries were at this level. However, the hugely influential Emil Buendia has since moved on to pastures new at Aston Villa.

Buendia was awarded the best player in the Championship last season, and was a justified recipient after contributing 31 (15G/16A) of Norwich’s 75 goals. The Argentine will be sorely missed, in particular his ability to carve out chances for a team that averaged a league-low 26 goals, at a rate of 0.68 per-game, the last time they competed in England’s top tier.

Liverpool – Reds should be just fine on the road?

Jurgen Klopp has never lost his opening league fixture in England, recording four wins from five such matches. One of those was also against Norwich. A 4-1 win at Anfield in August 2019 got the ball rolling for a remarkable sequence that seen them chalk up 24 wins in 25 league games, ultimately culminating in the Reds being crowned English champions for the first time in the Premier League era.

Unfortunately, they would relinquish said crown with a whimper. Though snatching a top-four finish on the final day of last season ensured they salvaged something from a turbulent campaign. Liverpool dropped just four points across their final ten matches. Away from home they thrived meanwhile, winning six of the last seven – four by at least a two goal margin – including the last three in a row.

Business has been relatively quiet in the transfer market though, with Ibrahim Konate the only notable addition thus far. A far bigger boost to Klopp, however, will be the return to fitness of defensive stalwart Virgil van Dijk. Regardless, supporters will demand nothing less than three points: Liverpool have won on each of their past seven visits to Carrow Road, averaging three goals per-game.

Norwich City Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

Not since a 1-0 win at Carrow Road in 1993 have Norwich City claimed all three points in the Premier League against Liverpool, who are bidding for their fourth consecutive victory in this fixture. The Reds have been especially dominant in Norfolk. The 2019-20 champions have won on each of their previous seven visits to this venue, with all but one of these encounters seeing three or more goals.

Norwich City Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Carrow Road has been a happy hunting ground for 2019-20 Premier League champions Liverpool. The Reds are searching for their eighth straight victory at this ground, scoring 21 times over this spell.
  • Five of Liverpool’s past six victories at Carrow Road were by a single-goal margin, including each of the last three.
  • Six of the previous seven Premie League meetings between the clubs at Carrow Road produced at least three goals. Both teams scored in five.

Of Liverpool’s past seven victories away to Norwich, five were by a single goal. So while goals are usually guaranteed when these teams meet, it may not be plain sailing for Jurgen Klopp’s charges who are seeking to win a seventh Premier League away game in eight. Don’t rule out the hosts adding to the spectacle, though. Norwich scored in 19 of 23 Championship home games last term.
