Preview: Matchday 3 of Denmark’s 2022-23 Superliga gets up and running inside Nature Energy Park, home of Odense BK, on Friday evening. Neither they or opponents Midtjylland have recorded a win thus far, so this feels like an important encounter even this early into the campaign.

Odense – Confidence sapped from all these winless outings?
We’re two rounds deep into the 2022-23 Superliga in Denmark, which means it is folly drawing too many conclusions this early into the season. However, these are slightly disconcerting times for the club from the third-largest city in the country, Odense Boldklub. Among five teams still to register a win in the new term (D1 L1), OB are currently winless across ten matches (D5 L5) when including pre-season friendlies.
The reason I chose to include friendlies is because all were against Danish opposition. Even without those games, it is still a seven-strong run without winning a competitive fixture (D5 L2), since defeating Sonderjyske, bottom of the Superliga in 2021-22, in May. They very nearly ended the drought last time out, though, surrendering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 away to Randers, having opened with a 2-0 home loss to Nordsjaelland.
Key Stat: Prior to losing their opening fixture of the 2022-23 Superliga season 2-0 to Nordsjaelland, which was at home, Odense had been undefeated at their Nature Energy Park stadium for five Superliga matches (W3 D2).
Midtjylland – Another short turnaround for last season’s runners-up?
If the three-time Danish champions, most recently in 2020, were handed a generous schedule early doors, then they haven’t capitalised. Bo Henriksen’s side would come home in second place last season, narrowly pipped to the league title by FC Copenhagen – though their penalty shootout success in the Danish Cup final, over their Matchday 3 opponents Odense, went some way to softening the blow.
They are yet to win a league fixture this season though, despite hosting both outings so far at MCH Arena. They were held 1-1 by Randers, before a 3-1 loss to a clinical Silkeborg, who converted three of their four shots in the game. Moreover, any good will from the fixture compiler was short lived. As this clash falls three days after an important Champions League qualifier, playing 120 laborious minutes out in Cyprus.
Key Stat: Defeat in their latest Superliga fixture, a 3-1 home loss at the hands of last season’s third place side, Silkeborg, halted the 13-game unbeaten run (W8 D5) in competitive matches of Midtjylland.

I feel I am beginning to sound like a broken record when it comes to highlighting potential bets from Denmark’s Superliga this season. Both Teams to Score has been my go-to tip thus far (tipped up in two of three Superliga games I previewed, with a 50% success rate) and this is another with all the hallmarks for BTTS. Particularly with Odense being specialists at the art of scoring and conceding last term.
Odense Vs Midtjylland – Key Facts:
- This fixture is a repeat of their Danish Cup final clash from May, a game in which neither side could find a breakthrough (0-0 FT). Midtjylland ultimately prevailed on penalties.
- Midtjylland would lose just one of seven prior visits to Odense in Superliga (W3 D3), with three of the past four such matches between the teams seeing three or more goals but also both teams scoring.
- Both these teams haven’t recorded a Superliga clean sheet for six matches. No team’s fixtures last season saw BTTS more than Odense (75%). There was BTTS in all of Midtjylland’s last five away league games.
In 2021-22, no team’s matches from the Danish top-flight saw BTTS return a winning selection more often than Odense (75% of Superliga fixtures). Five of their past six such games saw BTTS, as have all of the last seven for Midtjylland. The temptation, though, is to add an away win into the mix. Midtjylland have been a little unfortunate thus far whereas Odense leak goals, shipping 2+ in five successive matches this summer.
