Preview: It is now four winless outings in five for Orlando City, whose tilt towards the top of the Eastern Conference could be coming to an end. That is unless they can clinch maximum points against an Atlanta United outfit scrambling for their first MLS win since May.

Orlando City – Nani to drag them out of their dip?

Hopes of catching Eastern Conference leaders New England Revolution were dealt a fresh and emphatic blow after Orlando City went down 5-0 in the Big Apple to New York City FC in their latest MLS outing. That result, whilst also equalling their widest margin of defeat in league play ever, has them looking over their shoulder as opposed to upwards. Now closer to the play-off cut-off line than top spot in third place.

That is now four points from fifteen available during a frustrating and arduous month of July. A far cry from posting three wins out of three in June. Perhaps the biggest drop-off, however, resides in the defensive third. NYCFC became only the second team all season (15 games) to prevent the Lions from finding the back of the net, but it was a sixth game in a row in which this once reliable defence had been breached.

Unsurprisingly then, all but two of Orlando City’s past nine MLS encounters saw both teams find the goal. Meanwhile, only one didn’t surpass the three or more threshold for Over 2.5 Goals. The likelihood of goals, at least of the Orlando variety, are also boosted by the anticipated return of talisman Nani. The Portuguese is the only player at the club to reach double figures for goal contributions this season.

Atlanta United – New manager bounce yet to take effect?

Not even a change in manager and the returning Josef Martinez could spark this dormant Atlanta United team into life. Last Saturday’s 1-0 home loss to the Columbus Crew, who won their fourth straight head to head between the clubs, extended The Five Stripes’ barren run into double figures, now up to ten MLS matches without registering maximum points – their longest such run in history.

Although the positive results since switching out Gabriel Heinze for Rob Valentino in the ATAUTD hot seat haven’t yet been forthcoming, there are some sign of life. This team has struggled to create regular scoring opportunities through the season so far, surpassing 1 Expected Goals (xG) in less than half their fifteen matches. But two of the seven instances in which they did have been during Valentino’s short reign.

Yet it is now one goal in three games. Netting no more than a lone goal in six of their last seven – and in only one of the eight played away from home this season, among six teams still to register a maiden victory on the road (D5 L3). So these remain desperate times offensively. Their cause not aided by a substantial absentee list that includes three players currently on international duty with team USA.

Orlando City Vs Atlanta United Betting Advice

Goals haven’t always flowed between these sides. Just two of the past seven produced three or more, while two of the most recent three ended goalless. That includes the latest to be staged in Orlando, which was the opening fixture of this 2021 season back on 17 August. The pair have drifted in opposite directions since then, though. Orlando perched third in the same Eastern Conference Atlanta languish down in tenth.

Orlando City Vs Atlanta United – Key Facts:

  • Seven places and 11 points stand between third place Orlando City (W7 D4 L4) and Atlanta United (W2 D8 L5) in tenth in the MLS Eastern Conference.
  • Both teams have found the back of the net in all but one of the last six Orlando City matches, and in five out of eight away games for Atlanta United.
  • Yet goals are not synonymous with this fixture. Three of the last seven MLS meetings produced both teams scoring, the latest being their 0-0 draw in Orlando to begin the 2021 season.

On current form it is difficult making much of a case for either winning. Orlando have one win in five whereas Atlanta are up to ten without registering three points, in what is their longest ever wait for an MLS victory. I still feel there could be goals, however. Five of the last six Orlando matches produced BTTS, as did the last two for Atalanta away (5/8 for the season), who are at least looking improved offensively lately.
