In something of a surprise match-up at this stage of the competition, Orlando and Minnesota will battle it out to face Portland in the final of the MLS is Back tournament.

Orlando City Preview – Are Orlando set to continue their excellent run and contest next week’s final?

Perennial strugglers since becoming an MLS team, Orlando City have surprised everybody with their run to the last four of the MLS is Back tournament. Now under the stewardship of Oscar Pareja, City have been resolute and found ways to win games where before they may have come up short. That was no more evident in the quarter-final success against a formidable Los Angeles side. Orlando were a goal down heading towards the 90th minute before a Joao Braganca equaliser. That was the Portuguese’s first goal for City and came against his former team.

Orlando held their nerve to win 5-4 on penalties to see off the runaway winners of last season’s Western Conference.

Christopher Mueller is fast emerging as a key player for Orlando and is enjoying personally productive tournament. The young striker has scored three goals already including a double in a 3-1 win over New York City during the group stage. As a team, Orlando have scored in every game so far and for a team who have struggled in front of goal previously, that’s a feat in itself.

The boost that progressing to a first final in franchise history would give to Orlando is obvious and they will be determined to achieved that after their efforts so far.

Minnesota United Preview – Will Minnesota build on their excellent win in the quarter-final to progress?

Minnesota may be a more recent recruit to the MLS ranks than their opponents in this game but their progress has been much more impressive in that time and are building on an excellent campaign last season which seen them reach the playoffs for the first time. The experienced Adrian Heath has been in charge from the outset and his team have been very good so far in 2020.

Before the break, United had won their opening two games in the MLS – one of only four teams to manage that. They have continued that into the MLS is Back tournament.

The quarter-final win against conference rivals San Jose Earthquakes where they defeated them 4-1 was their best performance of the competition so far and it came with four different scorers. That’s indicative of what this team are all about, that it’s a collective effort as opposed to any one individual.

Like Orlando, Minnesota have also been taken to penalties en route to this stage. They narrowly got the better of Columbus Crew. It seems a long time since they were trailing Sporting Kansas in their first game only to score two goals in added time to take the points. That’s set the tone for what has come after.

Orlando City vs Minnesota United Betting Advice

It’s probably not a match-up many would have predicted in the semi-final but the teams are here on merit and it’s also something of a reunion for Heath who was the first coach of Orlando City. He, more than anyone, will be desperate to prevail and face the Timbers next week to win the inaugural MLS is Back competition.

The teams have met three times before at this level with Orlando yet to beat their opponents.

Key Facts – Orlando City vs Minnesota United Betting Tip

  • Orlando finished top of their section taking seven points from three matches, scoring six goals
  • Minnesota won their first to MLS games back in March and have continued their good form in this
  • Neither of these teams have been beaten in the competition so far

Despite that fact, it’s Orlando who are favoured to reach the final but it does look like being a very even contest. Both teams have found the net in four of both team’s five matches so far and that’s the selection I like here.
