Osasuna Preview – Arrasate’s stubborn side no pushovers?
The 2018/19 Segunda Division champions showed again that there is no inferiority complex among the collective, largely holding their own at Real Sociedad’s Anoeta Stadium to claim a deserved share of the spoils following a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Osasuna (11th – W8 D11 L9) didn’t create an awful lot from open play, though. Ultimately, they were reliant on a penalty, converted midway through the first half by forward Adrian, to get on the scoresheet.
Back in more customary settings, Los Rojillos should find stamping their mark on proceedings comes more naturally. Conversely, Real Madrid (1-4) and Real Sociedad (3-4) both departed with maximum points after scoring four each. The only real highlight so far being victory over seventh-placed Valencia, beating Los Che 3-1 but only after falling behind inside fifteen minutes.

These draws are seriously mounting up. Sunday’s stalemate in Bilbao, finishing 1-1 at San Mames courtesy of Diego Costa’s equaliser shortly before half-time, made it three in as many league games and took their tally for the season to 13. It begs the question, how much better off would Atletico Madrid (6th – W11 D13 L4) be were more of those draws converted into wins? A lot higher than sixth, that is for sure.
As things stand, not even a top-four finish – something normally perceived as a given – is guaranteed. Diego Simeone’s charges siting a point shy of fourth but among a clutch of teams all vying for two positions. They’re still favourites to come good before the season concludes, however, there must surely be more appealing alternatives than a side with two wins across its last nine league fixtures (W2 D5 L2).
Defence – keeping a robust, well-organised shaped whilst working harder than anybody else – used to be Atletico’s forte. This season, though, that simply isn’t the case. Athletic Bilbao are among the bluntest attacks in La Liga but still breached Atleti’s brittle rearguard, which has now gone five successive league games without a clean sheet and managed only one on the road in ten previous attempts.
