League One outfit, Oxford United, take on League Two side Cheltenham Town at their Kassam Stadium with the hosts looking to register back-to-back wins to their new season, following success on the weekend in the season opener.
Oxford United won 2-0 away from home at Oldham Athletic to start their new campaign off in winning fashion, and they have a chance to also progress through to the next round of the League Cup as they take on Cheltenham Town in the first round on Tuesday night.
The U’s reached the second round last season following a first round scalp away at Birmingham City, winning 1-0 in extra-time, and the minimum requirement this term is to reach the second round again I daresay. Attacking trio of Hall, Obika and Thomas could feature tonight.
Visitors Cheltenham Town lost their opening game of the new League Two season on the weekend when they went down 2-1 at Morecambe, which handed The Robins a third consecutive defeat in all competitions; they’d previously lost to Weston-Super-Mare and Bristol City in pre-season friendlies.
Cheltenham narrowly avoided relegation at the end of last season, finishing four points ahead of second from bottom Hartlepool United, although they did their best to make it interesting as they were thumped 6-1 away at promoted Portsmouth on the final day of the season!
With just one away win from their last ten away trips in all competitions, Cheltenham look to have their backs to the wall in this first round, and I’d be mightily surprised if they get a result against Oxford United tonight.
