Oxford United Preview – Can Oxford get back to winning ways after two straight losses in the league?

It’s not been a great start to 2020 for Oxford and their quest for promotion. Having lost only one game between the middle of September and end of 2019, Karl Robinson’s men have lost back to back matches in this new year, slipping down to fifth. It should not be too much of a concern at the moment considering they remain just five points behind the leaders. Where Robinson will be slightly frustrated is that the defeats have come against teams also chasing promotion.

This game against Ipswich is a game in hand over the top two meaning a win would see them move to within a couple of points of the automatic promotion places.

Oxford’s home form has been very good in the main up until losing against Rotherham on Saturday. Before that they were on a run of eight games without defeat, winning six of them. What was most surprising about the defeat at the weekend was the concession of three goals. Oxford had kept seven clean sheets in a row before then.

Robinson will be happy his team have a chance so soon after that defeat to put things right, especially as it comes at home to another promotion rival.

Ipswich Preview – Ipswich won their first game in nine, on  Saturday, can they follow up with another victory here?

Paul Lambert’s Ipswich got off to an excellent start and it looked like they were certainties to fill one of the automatic promotion places. The Tractor Boys won nine of their first 12 games and never lost until the 20th of October. It was the perfect way to bounce back from the disappointment of relegation the previous season but the wheels started to fall off after that first defeat.

Ipswich went on to win just two of their next 12 games. It has allowed the chasing pack not only to catch up but overtake them in the table. Lambert, therefore, would have been delighted to get a vital when when beating Accrington 4-1 on Saturday. Incredibly, it was their first success at home since the middle of September.

Whilst playing on the road against a team in the top six is going to be a difficult challenge, Ipswich have proven themselves to be very good away from home. Only leaders Rotherham have taken more points on their travels than Lambert’s team.

With two defeats and two draws in their last four away games Ipswich know the importance of getting back to winning ways here and following up on the good feeling of Saturday’s win. They can move into second spot with three points here.
