Preview: Back on Matchday 12, at 3-0 up inside the Westfalenstadion, Paderborn would go close to producing the upset of the season only to settle for a share of the spoils as Borussia Dortmund rallied after the interval. Here’s hoping the second instalment is just as exciting.

Paderborn Preview – Newcomers disappearing without a fuss?

With an unkind run of fixtures, dire form and an eight-point chasm to bridge on even the relegation play-off spot, the reality of relegation straight back to 2. Bundesliga is unavoidable for Paderborn (18th – W4 D6 L17). Even more regrettable is the fact seasoned fans who have regularly been in attendance on matchdays for many years, regardless of the league they were in, are no longer able to savour the remaining games at Benteler-Arena.

This was certainly a fixture in which supporters would have wanted to create a barmy atmosphere. For the first 45 minutes of the reverse encounter, Paderborn were excellent; countering on Dortmund with devastating affect to score three unanswered goals before the break. Steffen Baumgart’s men ultimately ran out of steam, but the 3-3 draw serves as the club’s most memorable moment during a maiden Bundesliga campaign.

Paderborn have won only four matches all season, fewer than all other sides, and therein lies the problem. Last Wednesday’s goalless stalemate at FC Augsburg made it three draws on the spin meanwhile, extending their long wait without a win to nine games (D4 L5) since stunning Freiburg on the road in late January. Goals have dried up too, scoring only twice across their previous five encounters.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – Focus turns to race for top-four?

Another promising league campaign will now almost certainly end with nothing tangible to show for it, after Borussia Dortmund (2nd – W17 D6 L5) fell seven points behind leaders Bayern whose 1-0 victory at Signal Iduna Park last Tuesday has surely put the Bundesliga title race to bed. They can ill-afford to be downbeat for long, though, as to finish the season outside of the top-four would truly be disastrous for Lucien Favre.

The Dortmund boss will absorb his fair share of criticism for his team’s apparent failure to rise to the occasion in either ‘Der Klassiker’ this season. It was another solid defensive showing, however, as Mats Hummels marshalled a defence which restricted Europe’s most prolific attack this season to precious few chances. BVB conceding for only the second time in seven Bundesliga games (W6 L1) – and it took a high-quality goal to breach them.

A four point cushion over fifth-placed Leverkusen seems healthy enough, especially with the remaining fixtures favourable on paper. However, nothing should be taken for granted. Put simply, Dortmund must dust themselves off quickly to ensure a bad week doesn’t become anything worse. Jadon Sancho and Emre Can could finally return to the starting XI, which would be a big boost, although Erling Haland has been confirmed as unavailable.

Paderborn Vs Borussia Dortmund Betting Advice

Without the backdrop of home fans at Benteler-Arena it isn’t easy foreseeing anything out of the ordinary occurring. Paderborn struggled even when supporters were allowed to attend games, winning two of fourteen at home so far, last doing so against Frankfurt before Christmas. Sure, Dortmund could be downhearted after the Bayern result, but there is still too much at stake for them to dwell.

Paderborn Vs Borussia Dortmund Key Facts

  • In 14 home Bundesliga games this season, Paderborn would fail to find the back of the net only once.
  • Away from home Borussia Dortmund are averaging more than twice the amount of goals conceded (1.64) than at home (0.79).
  • Six goals were evenly shared during these team’s first ever Bundesliga meeting on Matchday 12, with Dortmund fighting back from 3-0 down to claim a point.
