Preview: Go big or go home. Panama, whose games have been wild so far, take on the whipping boys of the group, Grenada, knowing only a handsome victory at Exploria Stadium, Orlando, gives them any sort of look in at potentially usurping second place Qatar.

Panama – Big win required from final outing?

For only the second time in this their tenth participation at the Gold Cup, Panama look set to miss out on the next round. Thomas Christiansen’s team have plundered five goals in their two matches so far, a figure superior to the sides currently occupying the top two spots in Group A and C, but languish third in Group D after following up a thrilling 3-3 draw with Qatar by going down 3-2 to Honduras.

Los Canaleros must now defeat Grenada by a handsome margin while also praying Honduras do them a huge favour in not allowing second place Qatar to pick up any points. The first part of that deal is non-negotiable and, along with racking up a fair few goals, should be relatively straightforward. However, keeping goals out is a different proposition, with only Martinique and Grenada shipping more.

No team-mate has more goals at this tournament than left-back Eric Davies, his tally of two on par with striker Rolando Blackburn. Davis has benefited from the award of two penalties, one in either fixture. Therefore, with Grenada likely to be on the back foot for large swathes of this contest in Orlando, it wouldn’t be in the least bit surprising were Davis presented with another opportunity from twelve yards.

Grenada – Heading out without so much as a consolation goal?

In possibly the most least surprising development of this summer’s tournament in the States, Grenada, the lowest ranked side competing in the 16th staging of the Gold Cup, are heading home early. The Spice Boys always looked up against it in a competitive Group D and so it has proved. They go into their final encounter rock-bottom and with the joint-worst goal differential in group play.

Aside from a couple of fleeting moments in attack, Grenada have barely had a look in thus far. A goal bound effort was hooked off the line in their opener with Honduras, but that was seemingly as good as it go as they were comprehensively outplayed next time out against Qatar. Head coach Michael Findlay must now find a way of lifting a downbeat squad after chastening 4-0 defeats in both aforementioned games.

Without finding the net in either outing to date, Grenada have now mustered one goal across all eight Gold Cup matches spanning three tournaments. Just the 33 have gone in up the other end of the field. The brutal reality is they’ve seldom come close to fashioning a clear-cut scoring chance at this tournament. But this could change against a porous Panama side which has leaked three goals in either game.

Panama Vs Grenada Betting Advice

The situation dictates that Panama attack this fixture. Based on the defensive efforts of their opponents in this tournament, we could be in for another wild encounter. Panama simply must win to have any chance of leapfrogging Qatar in Group D, and they will have to win convincingly, by several goals, to make up a five goal deficit should second place Qatar come unstuck in their clash with Honduras.

Panama Vs Grenada – Key Facts:

  • Successive 4-0 losses has meant Grenada are already out of the tournament. Panama retain an outside chance of making the last eight but need to win and hope Qatar lose.
  • Over 3.5 Goals has landed in all four Gold Cup matches involving these two teams, with both teams on target – and scoring 2+ each – in each of Panama’s outings so far.
  • In their two previous meetings, which were both in friendlies, Panama won to nil both times (2-0 in 2011, 5-0 five years later in 2017).

All four games involving Panama and Grenada have seen a minimum of four goals in the match. Panama will play on the front foot in search of the big win they crave, but this will only add to their vulnerability at the back having already allowed six goals so far (3 in each game). Over 3.5 Goals isn’t the most attractive of propositions but should go close. However, at bigger odds, I prefer the outside play on Both Teams to Score.
