Paraguay Preview – Will Paraguay return to better form?

It’s been a pretty dismal time for Paraguay of late and as a result, expectations are limited coming into this tournament. A failed World Cup qualification campaign meant they were watching events unfold in Russia from home last summer. They have lurked from manager to manager resulting in little continuity over the past couple of years. Eduardo Berizzo has been in charge since February of this year, but it’s had little effect. Defeats to Mexico and Peru in March was hardly the ideal start. That was followed by friendly games at the beginning of this month which were more positive. A draw with Honduras and then a 2-0 win against Guatemala earned Berizzo’s first success. It may not be significant, but it is something to build on coming into this competition. It was also their first win in eight matches which will be a weight off their shoulders.

Things look like they may get harder for Berizzo and Paraguay before they get better as well. Colombia and Argentina make up their group along with Qatar making this the most difficult group. Paraguay’s recent performances in the Copa America do not inspire confidence, either, with only one win their last seven attempts. Could this be a turning point to restore some positivity?!

Qatar – Can Qatar make history as first Arab nation at Copa America?

Qatar are one of two guest nations at this year’s Copa America along with Japan. At the same time, they will become the first Arab country to ever take part in the competition. With the 2022 World Cup fast approaching, to be held in Qatar, it’s another opportunity to raise the profile of their footballing potential. That was also the idea of playing hosts Brazil in a friendly as a precursor to the tournament itself. Qatar were defeated 2-0 in a game that will be remembered for Neymar suffering an injury which causes him to miss the Copa America. From Qatar’s point of view it was their first defeat in eight games, having won the previous seven. Felix Sanchez will celebrate two years in charge of the Qataris next month and this will be the biggest test yet in that time.

With Colombia and then Argentina to come after this, the chances of making it to the knockout phase could hinge on a getting a result against the lowest ranked South American team in this section. That said, Paraguay are still a full 19 places better off than Qatar in the same rankings.

Paraguay v Qatar Betting Advice

Although this is the most difficult of the three groups it’s conceivable that three teams could qualify for the knockout phase. Colombia have already laid down a marker beating Argentina last night and are currently in charge. Qatar and Paraguay know that a win would be a big step towards their hopes making it to the quarter-finals. Whilst it’s not a fixture we see often, these two nations have clashed before. Qatar won 2-0 in a friendly played in 2009 and would love nothing more to repeat that on Sunday.

It has been a real struggle for Paraguay over the last while and they are vulnerable going into this. Qatar will look to play on that vulnerability and are unexpected to be affected too much by that defeat to Brazil. Before that their winning run included successes against Japan and South Korea – both of whom are of similar standing to Japan. There will be pressure on Paraguay and I’m not convinced they will rise to the occasion. Qatar are a competitive team these and capable of getting a result here. At around evens they are worth a bet in the double chance market. Essentially, a win for Qatar or a draw would be a winner.
