Paraguay Preview – Will Uruguay make it three straight wins to boost qualification hopes?

You sense this is a really important international break for Paraguay and their coach Eduardo Berizzo who takes on his home nation in this game. Currently in sixth place, they are only two points off the top four of the section which brings with it automatic qualification. At the halfway stage it looks as though three teams will be competing for the final qualification spot and fifth place which would bring a playoff.

A lot can change, of course, but Berizzo will be paying particular attention to how Colombia and Ecuador do over the next seven days with only two points separating these three teams. Their two rivals face each other next week so it’s all about maximising the advantage Paraguay can take from the outcome of that match.

Paraguay got a much-needed win in their most recent qualifier – a 2-1 win at home to Venezuela. That is their second win in this campaign with the other coming against the same opponent only that time on their travels. The other seven games have seen them take five points with defeats coming against leaders Brazil and away to Ecuador.

With Chile and Bolivia away to come after this clash there are opportunities for Paraguay to collect some points and they have done well on their travels under Berizzo with the only defeat coming against Ecuador. They’ve also drawn away to Argentina earlier in qualification.

Argentina Preview – Can Colombia avenge their defeat against his rival from earlier in the campaign?

Leo Messi finally got his international success when Argentina won this summer’s Copa America. A 1-0 win against hosts Brazil secured a famous triumph for who many believe is the best player to ever play the game. He’s since moved club but he will be back to captain his country for the next set of World Cup qualifiers.

Argentina look to be in a strong position as the sit second in the section with five wins and three draws so far. The farcical circumstances which ended with the postponement of their last game against Brazil means they have played a game less than the teams below them.

Lionel Scaloni’s men are in excellent form just now and looking to extend an unbeaten record of 22 games which stretches back to July 2019. They face arch rivals and Uruguay at home after this game before hosting Peru and will hope to have a substantial lead over the chasing pack.

Colombia are the only team that Argentina have failed to beat away from home in qualifying so far, following comfortable wins over Peru, Bolivia and Venezuela. They’ve scored nine goals in for away games showing off the attacking threat they possess.

Paraguay vs Argentina Betting Advice

This would appear to be a bigger game for Paraguay than Argentina on the face of it. The battle for fourth and fifth is going to be extremely tight from here on in and every game is one where they need to try and get points as they play catch-up. Argentina look strong at the moment and they’re excellent on the road. Their unbeaten run stands at 22 games and they’re also fresh of that Copa America win.

Argentina have won on just one of their last five visits to Paraguay in World Cup qualification. That success coming back in 2013.

Key Facts – Paraguay vs Argentina Betting Tip

  • Paraguay have won just two of their last 10 home games in World Cup qualification
  • Argentina are looking to extend their unbeaten run to 23 matches (last defeat in July 2019)
  • The teams drew 1-1 when meeting earlier in the campaign

They may not have the best of records here but this does look like a good opportunity for the visitors to continue their excellent unbeaten run and make it four away wins from five attempts in this campaign.
