Tuesday 6th February 2018 Kick off 19450hrs Partick Thistle v Rangers Football – Scotland – Scottish Premiership Rangers were unable to take advantage of a rare slip up from Celtic at the weekend whilst Parick would also have been disappointed to only get one point out of their away clash with Motherwell, conceding in the last 10 or so minutes. A Glasgow derby is the perfect opportunity for both to return to winning ways and give their respective prospects a push in the right direction.

Partick will be pleased with how they have started 2018 with two wins, a draw and just the one defeat from their first four league games since returning from the winter break. Even the defeat came in the narrow 2-1 loss at home to Celtic last month when they equipped themselves very well. That good run of form has given them some breathing space at the bottom of the table where they now have a four point cushion over Ross County, and a point better off than Hamilton. The latter of those teams do have a game in hand, however, which illustrates just how tight this battle to avoid the drop is going to be, especially as the eventual 11th placed team will face a relegation playoff. Alan Archibald will be well aware of those circumstances and challenging his players to continue this good run. As mentioned above, the draw on Saturday with Motherwell will be frustrating after getting themselves into a winning position. The visit of Rangers will be a testing one, of course, but Thistle do have a very good home record and having run Celtic so close only a couple of weeks ago they’ll be confident of doing similar against the Ibrox outfit.

Rangers would have been kicking themselves after losing for the second time this season at home to Hibernian. Not only does it mean that Neil Lennon’s men have closed the gap to just two points (albeit this represents Rangers’ game in hand) it was an opportunity missed in their pursuit to close the gap on Celtic (who lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock earlier that day). A title challenge for Graham Murty’s men still looks a touch optimistic but if they had been able to extend their winning run to beat Hibs and then Partick, the gap would have been just eight points. These situations are precisely why Rangers still have a lot of improvement to find, though, and despite looking stronger following January’s transfer window it will take some time before they are able to find the consistency needed to win titles. What makes their current position of third even more annoying is that they have beaten Aberdeen on three occasions this term but still find themselves six points adrift – they need a win on Tuesday to ensure they can cut that margin in half. On a more positive side for Murty and his men it was the first defeat in six.

Partick Thistle v Rangers Betting Tip

It may not be the biggest or most prestigious of the Glasgow derbies but it’s sure to be a competitive one as they previous few meetings between the two have been at Firhill. This will be the third time the season that they have clashed at Thistle’s home ground. The points were shared the last time they met in the league here, back in September, in what was an excellent advert for Scottish football. Rangers required extra time to secure a win over Thistle in the League Cup shortly after that before a comfortable 3-0 at Ibrox the last time they met. It’s likely to be a much closer affair on Tuesday, however.

Partick Thistle have not beaten any Rangers team for over 20 years which they are reminded of each time they face them. The hosts do have a solid home record, however. Only Aberdeen have comprehensively beaten them thus far this term and having played the champions twice that is decent going. Rangers do perform well on the road, however, and can actually join Celtic with the best record on the road should they take all three points against Thistle. As alluded to above, it would also half the gap between themselves and Aberdeen in second place.

One of the most apparent trends when it comes to Rangers’ away games is the number of times they both score and concede when on their travels. Stretching back to the end of last season, their last 14 away games in the league have resulted in 12 of them finishing with both teams finding that net. Two of those games have come at Firhill and when you add in the League Cup game which ended 1-1 at extra time, it’s a convincing enough reason to suggest that similar can be expected once again.
