Partick Thistle Preview – Will Thistle end Celtic’s incredible domestic cup form and cause a huge upset?

Ian McCall was brought back to Partick Thistle – a club he has great affection for – to steer them to safety and avoid another relegation battle. Relegation from the Premiership in 2017/18 following surviving on the final day in this league last season means Thistle were in need of something more positive.

It’s looking very likely, however, that they will be involved to the death once again. Partick are second bottom having played more games than all the other teams round about them. They are four clear of bottom club Alloa but three adrift of the teams above them. Some solace for McCall is that fifth placed Dunfermilne are the same number of points away from them.

It’s been a decent enough spell for Thistle of late with three wins and a draw from their last six matches. The two defeats have come against both Dundee clubs and both have those have come at Firhill. Last weekend’s 4-1 reverse against leaders United is probably not the game to judge them on but equally, they face another daunting proposition with the visit of Celtic tomorrow.

A Scottish Cup run is definitely not the priority for Thistle and they only narrowly defeated Penicuik Athletic of the lower leagues 1-0 in the last round.

Celtic Preview – Are Celtic set to avoid any surprises and make it 32 cup victories in a row?

Celtic have not played since losing to Rangers at the end of December. The winter break for Premiership clubs means Neil Lennon and his players have had a long time to think about that defeat and the challenges ahead for the second half of the campaign. The champions have done very little wrong with qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League coming on the back of winning the League Cup.

They are also still top of the table, albeit having played a game more. Lennon will be fully aware that they are very much involved in a title race this year, though.

No team has won more Scottish Cups than Celtic and they have dominated of late winning the last three. Their consistency across both cup competitions is unprecedented, with their last defeat coming back in April 2016. It’s an incredible run of form but one which will end at some point.

Lennon will be hoping his team have enough to see off Championship opposition on this occasion, however, and may see it as an opportunity to give some time to new signing Patrick Klimala

Partick Thistle vs Celtic Betting Advice

It’s now 31 games since Celtic last suffered defeat in domestic cup action. They have already retained the League Cup for another season and this is their first step to making it four in-a-row for this competition. Clearly, the league title and Europa League are bigger priorities for the club but they will have their eyes set on winning this, too.

It would be a massive shock if Partick are to end that run here and they will have to do a lot better than when losing 5-0 at Celtic Park earlier this season in the League Cup.

Key Facts – Partick Thistle vs Celtic Betting Tip

  • Partick have won three of their last six games but beaten heavily last time out
  • Celtic are looking to make it four straight Scottish Cup successes and have won all their previous 31 cup games
  • The teams also met in this year’s League Cup which Celtic won 5-0 back in September

It’s hard to see anything other than a comfortable away win. Celtic will be keen to put that defeat to Rangers behind them and should progress to the next round with something to spare.

Celtic usually come back from the winter break refreshed and have hit four or more goals 10 times this season. Over 3.5 Celtic goals looks like a solid selection as a result.
