Partick Thistle Preview – Can Thistle move closer to opponents and other promotion chasing teams?

Thistle returned to action for the first time in three weeks at weekend with a 2-2 draw away to Hamilton. A number of postponements over the Christmas period meant Ian McCall’s men hadn’t played since the 18th of December. The point leaves them in fifth place and six points behind leaders Arbroath, but they do have two games in hand over that rival as well as at least one on the other three teams who sit above them in the division.

McCall will have been happy enough with how the first half of the season has went considering they are only just returning to Championship football following promotion. However, in a season which looks wide open it does appear to be a real opportunity for Thistle to at least finish in the playoffs, if not challenge for the title.

(odds taken 2000 GMT, Thursday 6 January )

Their home form has been strong for the most part with five wins and two draws from nine games. Kilmarnock won on their last visit here (back in September) whilst Arbroath were also victorious last month. An interesting observation of Thistle’s home campaign is that both teams have scored in just one of their nine matches at Firhill – and that was on the opening day.

Strikers Brian Graham and Zak Rudden are responsible for exactly half of their league goals (16 of 32) and the duo will be looking to enhance that partnership in this crunch match.

Kilmarnock Preview – Will Killie follow up Saturday’s win to maintain McInnes’ winning start?

Following Tommy Wright’s departure in December there has been much speculation about who would replace him. Derek McInnes was seen as something of an ambitious candidate but the Kilmarnock board have been able to get their man. The former Aberdeen boss was in the dugout for the first time on Saturday, leading his new players to a 2-0 win away to Queen of the South.

Killie supporters will hope that it is the starting of a winning run which sees them live up to their billing as title favourites, something which has been missing for the majority of the campaign.

Last weekend’s win mean Kilmarnock sit in third place and a couple of points off Arbroath – they too have a game in hand over the leaders. McInnes will be well aware that despite the win first time out it is going to be a real battle for the title, with five teams all closely matched on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far.

They have the best away record in the league with seven wins from 11 matches. And whilst losing consecutive away games against title rivals Inverness and Raith, will be hopeful of doing the double over Thistle at this venue.

Partick Thistle vs Kilmarnock Betting Advice

This game is not going to be decisive in terms of the Championship title but it will be important in the context of both club’s hopes of promotion. A win for Thistle puts them a point behind Kilmarnock with a game in hand whilst victory for the visitors would be a second straight win for McInnes since taking charge and would take them top ahead of the other weekend matches.

The team playing away from home has won each of the two meetings between the sides so far this season, with Thistle avenging their defeat here earlier in the campaign with a 1-0 win at Rugby Park.

Key Facts –  Partick Thistle vs Kilmarnock Betting Tip

  • Both teams have found the net in just one of Thistle’s nine home matches this season
  • Kilmarnock are the best travellers in the Championship, taking 23 points from a possible 33
  • The side playing away from home has been successful in the two previous meetings between the teams this season

This looks like being a very competitive encounter and one which I don’t see many goals in. Kilmarnock matches have the lowest average number of goals (2 per game) and six of Thistle’s last nine home games have had two or fewer goals. Back under 2.5 goals in this one.
