For a long time it has looked as though Partick’s hopes of winning the title and automatic promotion were virtually done and it was all about ensuring they achieved a top four finish and entry into the playoffs. Now, however, there is some optimism again that Ian McCall’s men could yet usurp Arbroath and Kilmarnock and clinch first place.
That is down to the fact they returned to winning ways with a 1-0 success at home to Inverness Caley Thistle on Friday. A first win in five league games and seeing them go within nine points of the leaders, but with two games in hand over the two teams currently above them.

Allan Johnston’s sacking last month came the way as no surprise considering the struggles Queen of the South have had. The Doonhamers won just one of the last 16 league games that Johnston was in charge of and were staring down the barrel of relegation to League One. Willie Gibson has been given the manager’s job on an interim basis and continues to combine playing duties with his new responsibilities.
It makes it all the more remarkable that Queens have shown significant improvement in the last couple of weeks – not only to reach the final of the Challenge Cup but improve their hopes of staying in the Championship.

They come into this game on the back of four matches unbeaten in all competitions – winning three of them and drawing with leaders Arbroath. Queens have yet to concede a goal under Gibson which is even more incredible as they hadn’t kept a clean sheet in their previous six. Their current run may be unsustainable but if they can at least maintain their better defensive performances then it does bode well for the remainder of the season.
Scoring goals on their travels has not been as much of an issue in recent times, either, finding the next in each of their last six and scoring 11 times in that run.
