Perth Glory – Top-six aspirations diminishing?

A first clean sheet of the season provided the platform for Perth Glory (W5 D4 L8) to collect only a second point in their last five A-League matches, holding Macarthur FC to a goalless draw at HBF Park on Saturday. The point did little to improve their chances of qualifying for the Final Series, though, now nine points shy of Western United and the top-six ahead of hosting league leaders Melbourne City.

It is now three blanks in five since Glory coach Richard Garcia last oversaw victory, netting twice in more than seven hours of action since a 2-1 win at home to Newcastle Jets, currently rock-bottom of the A-League, at the tail end of March. That their sole success in the past eleven league outings (D4 L6), having accrued five of a possible fifteen points from their past five encounters on their own turf.

The Glory boast the upper hand here in Perth, however, winning nine of twelve A-League meetings (D1 L2) between the two sides since 2012. Although they would be punished for a lacklustre first-half showing in last season’s corresponding fixture. Trailing 3-0 at half-time, the hosts would rally after the break, scoring two unanswered goals in an ill-tempered second-half that concluded with them on the end of a 3-2 defeat.

Melbourne City – Formidable at home, vulnerable away?

Last season’s runners-up Melbourne City (W11 D2 L5) opened up a four-point lead atop the A-League last Thursday, provisionally at least, following a comprehensive 3-1 victory over bottom of the table Newcastle Jets that made it six straight home wins at AAMI Park. Said advantage has since been reduced to three over the weekend, although Patrick Kisnorbo’s table-toppers do boast a couple games in hand.

As already mentioned, City are flying on home soil. Less so on their travels, however, denied the three points in three of their past four outings (W1 D2 L1). Even suffering their sole defeat in twelve away to Western United at the start of April. They have since edged Wellington in a five-goal bonanza, prior to a pair of 1-1 scorelines with defending champions Sydney FC and, more recently, Macarthur FC.

Wherever this team goes they carry a significant goalscoring threat. In particular through Jamie Maclaren whose strike last time out took his tally for the season in A-League to 20 – eight more than next best Matt Derbyshire of Macarthur FC and at least twelve more than any Perth Glory player has thus far managed. City have netted in all of their past twelve league encounters, including the last six on the road.

Perth Glory Vs Melbourne City Betting Advice

For all their recent travails, Perth Glory retain a decent record here at HBF Park. Just two visiting teams have won there since the A-League season got underway in January. Meanwhile, Wednesday’s guests possess a poor record in this fixture. Melbourne City losing nine of their last twelve away meetings with The Glory, although did prevail 3-2 when the sides last met here in March of last year.

Perth Glory Vs Melbourne City – Key Facts:

  • Across the previous twelve A-League meetings held with Perth Glory as the designated home side, on only three occasions did the hosts not emerge victorious (D1 L2).
  • Seven of the previous seven A-League meetings in Perth produced a contest which saw both teams score, with last season’s corresponding fixture ending 3-2 in favour of Melbourne City.
  • Perth Glory approach this game having failed to win in five A-League games (D2 L3), whereas Melbourne City are unbeaten in five (W3 D2).

The current A-League standings paint an altogether less enthusiastic case about the home side’s prospects. Perth Glory sit third from bottom after one win in eleven and none in their last five. They’re also struggling to score. Conversely, Melbourne City top the table having won nine of their last twelve (D1 L2), but have struggled lately on the road (W1 D2 L1). At the odds, I will chance the hosts avoiding defeat.
