It’s third versus  second in the A-League on Sunday as Perth Glory host Melbourne City. Glory can go above their opponents in the table should they take all three points.

Perth Glory Preview – Can Perth end a run of three games without a win and climb back into second place?

Tony Popovic will be a very frustrated coach at this point in time as his Perth Glory team struggle through a difficult part of the season. Glory have managed just one win in their last six games in all competitions causing them to fall further behind leaders Sydney FC and drop into third place, just behind their next opponents.
The frustration for Popovic comes from the fact his team have drawn three of their last five league games and lost last time out against Newcastle Jets last weekend. Considering they had reeled off six straight wins after a disappointing start to the campaign, it’s now time for them to get back to winning games regularly.

Glory came agonisingly close to winning the competition last season – losing out on penalties to the all-conquering Sydney in the Grand Final. They remain well placed to get back there but will be keen to move into second place which a win on Sunday would achieve.
Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli has been instrumental in his team’s good form this season – scoring 11 goals so far. He enjoyed two four seasons at Melbourne City but will be looking to put one over his former club this weekend.

Melbourne City Preview – Will Melbourne get their first away win since the middle of December to stretch lead over Glory?

Erick Mombaerts is in his first season in charge of Melbourne and will be relatively happy with how his team are progressing. Champions Sydney are the unquestionable benchmark for any team in the A-League and the fact City are sitting behind them coming into the weekend is a big positive. They may be 10 points behind the leaders having played a couple of games extra, but it’s progress considering they finished in fifth place at the end of the previous regular season.

One area which Mombaerts will want to improve on is his team’s away form. City have won just three away games so far, in comparison to seven wins at home.

Just like their hosts on Sunday, Melbourne City have their own prolific striker and one who has played with the opposition earlier in his career. Jamie MacLaren is in his second season in Melbourne but he is making a more significant impact this campaign with 14 goals so far. Only Adam Le Fondre has scored more so far in the league.

MacClaren started his career at Perth Glory, spending two seasons there before moving on to Brisbane in advance of playing in Europe for a couple of seasons.

Perth Glory vs Melbourne City Betting Advice

This will be the third meeting of the season between these teams but the first in Perth. The previous two have taken place in Melbourne with City taking four points from those matches. As I’ve alluded to above, however, their form on the road is not nearly as strong and they will have to show more resilience than some of their recent away displays.
Glory have won their previous two home games against Melbourne, with City winning only on one of their last 11 visits to Perth.

Key Facts – Perth Glory vs Melbourne City Betting Tip

  • It’s now just one win in the last six across all competitions for Perth Glory
  • Melbourne have won only three away games in the league all season, losing four
  • The sides played out a goalless draw in their last meeting whilst Melbourne won 3-0 earlier in the season

This is an opportunity for Perth to get back to winning ways being at home. They’re unbeaten in their last five at home, taking 13 points in that spell. With Melbourne’s away form inspiring little confidence, I’m taking Perth to get all three points and move into second spot.
