Philadelphia Union – Return home to bring about first win in four?

After collecting one point from the last nine available, all in away outings, Philadelphia Union should appreciate this weekend’s return to home comforts. It is critical that they maximise home field advantage too. After welcoming DC United to Subaru Park, Jim Curtin and his side head straight back out on the road for a Florida double header against Eastern Conference rivals Orlando City and Inter Miami.

There should be a noticeable spring in the step, though, following one of those ‘draws that feel like a win’ type of results last time. Trailing 1-0 to a New York Red Bulls outfit chasing a fifth straight home victory, the ten men of Union – stand-in goalkeeper Matt Freese was dismissed in the same move which saw them fall behind – dug deep to equalise late on and claim a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Red Bull Arena.

However, there can be no escaping what has been a dramatic drop-off in output. That is now one win in five, having previously won four of five, while defensively they have allowed five goals in their last three games – that only one shy of the total they had conceded across all ten prior MLS game this season. Will a return to Subaru Park do the trick? Well, they have won their last three there without conceding.

DC United – Backing up historic victory won’t be easy?

How does a team follow up their biggest MLS victory? Well we are about to find out for ourselves as DC United return to action for the first time in a fortnight since that sensational performance in their 7-1 dismantling of Toronto FC at Audi Field. It was the first time the Washington based franchise had ever scored seven in MLS, and was only three shy of their entire total for the season prior to then.

Although the manner of that display caught just about everybody off-guard, the win was less of a surprise. Their fourth from six home league outings in 2021. In fact, only two visiting teams have so far enjoyed any success away to the Black and Red. High-flyers Orlando City and Philadelphia Union. The latter, whom they clash with next, continuing their dominance of a fixture they last lost in 2017 with a 1-0 victory in May.

Subsequently, DC have lost eight of nine meetings in league play. If that wasn’t ominous enough, a borderline disastrous away record suggests another laborious outing awaits. Under the tutelage of Argentine Hernan Losada, United boast four points from eighteen on their travels, with the solitary win to date remaining the 3-0 scoreline enjoyed over joint-bottom of the Eastern Conference Inter Miami.

Philadelphia Union Vs DC United Betting Advice

Momentum can swing like a pendulum in football, but particularly in the MLS where a mazy streak – good or bad – isn’t beyond any team. Just ask DC United, who ended their two game winless streak with their most emphatic ever MLS victory. A 7-1 humbling of Toronto FC who have since franked that form by turning over the leaders of the Eastern Conference, New England Revolution, away from home.

Philadelphia Union Vs DC United – Key Facts:

  • Four points separate third place Philadelphia Union (W5 D5 L3) down to DC United (W5 D1 L6) in seventh in the MLS Eastern Conference.
  • Philadelphia Union scraped a 1-1 draw away to New York Red Bulls last time out, making it no win in three (D2 L1). However, they are targeting a fourth straight win when playing at home.
  • DC United recorded their biggest ever MLS win last time, a 7-1 thrashing of Toronto FC. However, they have only won one of six away matches this season (W1 D1 L4).

Despite the feel good vibes emanating from that much lauded victory, a swift reality check may be in order for DC United. Not only is their away record among the poorest in MLS (W1 D1 L4) but Philadelphia Union are beginning to grow in stature here at Subaru Park, where, after a ropey first couple games, they are seeking to win for a fourth consecutive home fixture – the last three all being to nil.
