Preview: The in form duo of Plymouth and Portsmouth sat side-by-side in the League One standings prior to a ball being kicked ahead of this weekend’s round of matches, with both sides in red hot form of late, particularly in front of goal. We should be in for an enjoyable spectacle therefore, down at Home Park in Devon.

Plymouth Preview – Pilgrims can find home comforts at Home Park?

The Pilgrims have so far made the transition between the fourth and third tiers of English football appear seamless. After finishing third in League Two in 2019-20, behind Crew and Swindon, the club from Devon currently reside eighth in League One having lost only twice in ten league outings to date (W5 D3 L2) – and none whatsoever here at fortress Home Park.

Under former Bury manager Ryan Lowe, Plymouth have established a formidable record on their own patch. Last season seen them lose two of nineteen (W12 D5 L2) at their Devon base, shutting out eight teams in the process. This season, meanwhile, they are one of three teams along with Peterborough and Ipswich, who are first and second respectively, yet to lose a home league game, winning four out of five.

That fine record will soon be tested by the best away outfit in the league, with Portsmouth picking up more points on the road than any other side thus far. However, Plymouth needn’t be in awe. For they are unbeaten across four previous home meetings, albeit each of the past three have ended in a draw since their narrow 1-0 success towards the end of the 2014-15 League Two season.

Portsmouth Preview – Jackett’s men now sound travelers?

The play-offs ultimately did for Portsmouth last term, and not for the first time having fallen at that same stage the season before. But it was an otherwise solid campaign under former Millwall boss Kenny Jackett whose side have made a determined start to the new campaign, no doubt keen to bypass the lottery of the play-offs this time around and instead secure automatic promotion.

Through their first eleven league games, Pompey boast a respectable record (W6 D2 L3), have scored more goals (19) than anyone bar leaders Peterborough, and enough points in the bank for them to sit seventh in the table, only two points worse off than second place Ipswich Town. The one aspect which has changed from last season, however, has been the flipping of the form book away from home.

In 2019-20, Portsmouth were the only team to go unbeaten at home. They have already succumbed three times at Fratton Park this season, though, but have compensated for this by dropping just two points on their travels (W4 D1). Meanwhile last week’s 3-1 success away at high-flying Lincoln made it four away league wins on the spin, as well as the fourth straight away match in which they scored at least twice.

Plymouth Vs Portsmouth Betting Advice

This looks an intriguing match-up between sides in close proximity in the League One table, with Plymouth settling into their new surroundings nicely and look set to provide visiting Portsmouth with a stern challenge at Home Park. In fact, our hosts are still unbeaten at home this season, winning four of five including all of the last four – mirroring what Portsmouth have achieved on their travels with four successive victories.

Plymouth Vs Portsmouth – Key Facts:

  • No team in League One has collected more points at home than Plymouth Argyle (W4 D1 at home in 2020/21), having tasted defeat only twice in 25 league home games since start of last season.
  • With 13 out of a possible 15 points registered away from home this season, Portsmouth (W4 D1 away in 2020/21) boast the best away record in the English third tier.
  • Portsmouth are unbeaten in six meetings across all competitions (W2 D4) but last won away to Plymouth in 2015 (D3 L1 since).

With Plymouth scoring more goals at home (12 in 6 such games) this season than all bar league leaders Peterborough, and with Portsmouth averaging more goals on their travels (12 in 4) than anyone, we should be in for a fun encounter in Devon. Over 2.5 Goals feels a fair price, therefore, at 3/4 (Unibet). I also feel the hosts are worth chancing, both to win and with the added insurance of Draw No Bet (13/8 with BetFred).
