Euro Qualifiers Tips

Poland v Greece

All eyes will be on Warsaw tomorrow at 5pm as Poland face Greece in the first match of Euro 2012. As with any host nation, Poland will have the weight of an entire country on their shoulders and it will be interesting how they handle it. Players can either thrive on the pressure whilst it can be too much for others and they up performing well below their best. Having won five of their last six friendlies, they come into the Championships in good form but approach with caution. Poland have not played a competitive fixture since 2009. The last time they were at this stage they managed just one point from the group stages and duly went out.

Greece have fond memories of the tournament having surprised everyone when winning the 2004 renewal in Portugal. It was a side built on a solid defence and disciplined game plan and as it worked, you have to say it was the right thing to do. Fernando Santos has built a similar side to that of Otto Rehhagel’s and would love a similar result. Their qualification was impressive considering they finished above Croatia to top their group and were unbeaten, but don’t expect them to light the tournament up in an attacking sense – they were the lowest scorers of all the nations who finished top of their group in qualifying.

As per my last post, I have already backed Poland to progress from Group A so have little interest in backing the win here. A point isn’t a terrible result for either side as they will have a further two games to earn the points they need. Take a chance on under two goals as I doubt there will be a great urgency from either side so early in the competition.
