Ponte Preta will be looking to lift themselves up into the top 12 of the Brazilian Serie A and in turn, one of the Copa Sudamerica spots, with all three points on Wednesday night when they entertain struggling Bahia at their Estádio Moisés Lucarelli.
Ponte Preta come into this clash without a win from their last three league matches overall, but this can be quite easily explained as they’ve played Palmeiras and Corinthians, both of whom are in the top five, and an away match at Avai.
But early form on home turf has shown promise as they’ve won four of their first five matches amidst an overall record so far of 4-0-1 10/4. Wins over Sport Recife, Sao Paulo, Chapecoense and Cruzeiro should give them confidence here, despite losing last time out to high-flying Palmeiras.
Visitors Bahia currently occupy 16th place in the Brazilian top flight and have avoided the relegation zone courtesy of a slightly better goal difference, but they face a tough encounter at Ponte Preta as they’re still without a win on the road so far in this campaign.
Bahia have recently stemmed the bleeding which saw them lose three on the trot, with recent draws against Vitoria and Fluminense, but the fact remains that they’ve now gone seven matches without a win in Serie A, and are dangerously close to being dragged down into the bottom four.
An away record of 0-2-4 1/7 underlines the problems they’ve had on their travels so far this season, and I just can’t see them taking all three points here against better opposition.
