UEFA Champions League
Pick: Chelsea to WIN
Odds: 9/10

(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 4th April 2021)

Preview: The draw was kind on Chelsea who know a semi-final awaits should they overcome the tournament’s rank outsiders. Porto accounted for perennial Serie A winners Juventus in the previous round though, so are not a side to be taken lightly, with both legs held on neutral territory over in Seville, Spain.

Porto – Underdogs rising to the challenge?

With the defence of their Portuguese Primeira Liga title not going according to plan, having also failed to retain the domestic cup, the Champions League represents Porto’s best route to silverware this season. Sergio Conceicao’s side are certainly here on merit, though, showing tremendous tenacity in the round prior to claim the scalp of Juventus, eliminating the reigning Italian champions on the away goals rule (4-4 agg).

Porto can also lay claim to being the only team to score past tournament favourites Manchester City in Europe this season, albeit that came in a 3-1 loss in Manchester that preceded a goalless draw when the Premier League leaders visited on Matchday 5. It is, however, worth stressing that this opening leg isn’t being played at their Estadio do Dragao, where they’ve beaten Juventus, Marseille and Olympiacos this term.

The lack of home advantage could be critical therefore, as this is clearly a side who thrive on their own patch. Then there is their negative record when facing Wednesday’s opposition (W2 D1 L5), before even mentioning some key absentees. None more integral to their success in the competition so far than midfielder Sergio Oliveira, their leading marksman with five but serving a suspension in this first leg.

Chelsea – Blues keen to atone for weekend debacle?

Whether the short turnaround is a good thing or not, it is of the utmost importance that Chelsea deliver a strong riposte to Saturday’s humiliating defeat at the hands of a West Brom side who were second from bottom and struggling for goals but somehow found the net five times at Stamford Bridge. It brought an emphatic end to Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten 14-game tenure since replacing Frank Lampard.

The Blues had been watertight prior to that 5-2 scoreline, registering 12 clean sheets in all under their new German manager, which included both legs of their 3-0 Round of 16 aggregate victory over La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid. They were professional throughout that tie and must do so again against obdurate opponents willing to cede possession as they bide their time for opportunities to hit on the break.

Changes from the team humbled last time are inevitable. Ben Chilwell, Antonio Rudiger, Callum Hudson-Odio, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount all started on the bench but are expected to come into the side in Seville. There may also be a start up top for Olivier Giroud, whose four-goal haul at this same venue during the group phase helped the English side, currently fourth in the Premier League, thrash Sevilla 4-0.

Porto Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

As bad as Chelsea were on Saturday, it would be unwise to judge them solely on that basis of that one display while ignoring all the positive work undertaken since Thomas Tuchel came in. The German has made them better balanced and more cohesive, but especially well-drilled. They were also missing several players who are almost certain to start here, with Rudiger, Chilwell, Mount and Havertz fresher for it.
