Portsmouth Prediction – Can Portsmouth continue revival?

It’s been a slow and frustrating start to this season’s League One campaign for Portsmouth and their supporters as the south coast club have failed to live up to their pre-season tags as one of the favourites for promotion from the third tier so far this term.

Portsmouth were narrowly edged out by Sunderland 1-0 on aggregate in last season’s League One play-off semi-finals, so naturally it was assumed that Kenny Jackett’s side would be among the front-runners in this season’s early league placings but this hasn’t been the case yet.

Having gained just 1 win out of their first 7 matches of the new third tier season, Pompey fans were calling for Jackett’s head as their side were struggling in the early stages, losing to Shrewsbury Town, Sunderland and Wycombe Wanderers.

However, it should be noted that all 3 of Portsmouth’s defeats have come away from home whilst at Fratton Park, Portsmouth still remain unbeaten with a record of 2-2-0 8/5 which includes wins against Tranmere Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, while losing just 1 of their last 14 on home turf overall.

Gillingham Prediction – Can Gillingham disrupt Portsmouth’s plans?

15th placed Gillingham sit just one league position and 1 point above their Saturday afternoon’s hosts, Portsmouth, as the Kent side prepare for their trip to the south coast, still looking to capture their first away win of the season.

The Gills have produced a mixed bag of results in recent weeks as they’ve captured wins against Wycombe Wanderers and a poor Southend United outfit, but they’ve also fallen to defeats to League One leaders, Ipswich Town, and at high-flying Oxford United.

It’s worth mentioning that the two aforementioned victories were both posted at Gillingham’s Priestfield Stadium, while on the road, The Gills possess a rather average looking away record of 0-3-2 4/8 which includes defeats at Coventry City and the aforementioned Oxford United loss.

Indeed, Steve Evans’ side have managed to register just 4 away wins out of their last 17 matches on their travels (admittedly, a large portion of these away results were inherited by Evans), but the fact remains that they’ve continued to struggle on the road.

Key-Facts – Portsmouth v Gillingham

  • Portsmouth have lost just 1 of their last 14 home matches in League One
  • Portsmouth have won their last 2 league matches on the trot
  • Gillingham have won just 4 of their last 17 matches away from home

Betting Tips Verdict

Portsmouth’s recent revival will have breathed new life and confidence back into the squad and they now look well placed for a third consecutive win against Gillingham on Saturday.
