Portsmouth kept their hopes of a play-off place in League One alive last weekend when they registered a valuable 2-0 win away at Oldham Athletic, and they now return to Fratton Park for this Sunday’s encounter with out of sorts, Oxford United.
Kenny Jackett’s men have also produced mixed results of late following a previous win over Fleetwood Town (away), but have also fallen to recent losses to Southend United, Blackpool and Gillingham. Even more concerning, is the fact that Pompey have lost their last three on the trot on home turf, as well as failing to win any of their last six.
However, there’s still cause for optimism here with forwards Pitman (16 goals), Hawkins (7 goals) and Chaplin (5 goals) continuing to score goals, and this is a must-win game for the hosts today.
Onto Oxford United, and they ended a run of five league matches without a win when they recorded a 2-1 home win over Peterborough United at the Kassam Stadium which prevented them from dropping deeper into relegation trouble.
Those three points has lifted The U’s five points clear of fourth from bottom Northampton Town, but they’re still not out of the woods yet, and having registered just one away win from their last nine outings, they face another tough challenge on the south coast this Sunday afternoon.
In addition, an away record of 5-5-8 23/25 doesn’t fill me with any confidence that they can get all three points at Fratton Park today, and with their poor run of results on the road, this should present the perfect opportunity for Portsmouth to return to winning ways here, but I advise using the handicap.
