Portugal v Spain Betting Tip Under 2.5 goals – World Cup 2018

Close game likely between Spain and Portugal

Friday 15th June 1900hrs Portugal v Spain Football – International – World Cup It may just be the fifth game of this World Cup but this Iberian clash is one of the biggest in the whole group stage. Portugal surprised the whole of Europe when winning the European Championships two summers ago whilst Spain (who were defending champions at the time) suffered a shock at the other end of the spectrum by being knocked out at the first knockout stage. Both nations were knocked out at the group stage of the last World Cup, held in Brazil, and will want to perform much better this time around – lets see what betting tips catch our eye as Portugal play Spain.

Although Portugal have one of the best players ever to play the game in their ranks and have a tradition of playing attractive football, they adopt a very pragmatic approach these days and it worked every so well for them in France two years ago. Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, they were dour stayers and eventually surprised the hosts after extra time in a final that will certainly not live long in the memory. It would be a surprise if they can adopt the same approach and end as World champions this summer but there is a large amount of the same players who make up the squad for Russia 2018. Qualification was a hard fought affair as they battled with Switzerland for top spot and eventually saw off that opponent by winning the final game in the section. A third place finish at the Confederations Cup last summer was a good preparation for Portugal but they’ll have to be at their best to get through one of the harder sections in this World Cup, predominantly because of Spain but also because Morocco, and especially Iran, who although somewhat unknown, are traditionally very awkward opposition.

The big news surrounding Spain ahead of their opening group game against Portugal on Saturday is that their coach Julen Lopetegui will be taking over as Real Madrid manager once Spain’s participation in the World Cup is over. Of course, the whole country will be hoping that is after the final in Moscow in mid-July but it’s a surprising appointment in the wake of Zinedine Zidane’s departure earlier this month. This World Cup will be Lopetegui’s first and last as boss of his national team and he could well make it an extremely memorable one. Spain were one of the most impressive in all of qualifying and are many people’s fancy to regain a World Cup they won back in 2010. The less said about Brazil in 2014 the better, but they have to banish the demons that linger from that competition and the previous European Championships and live up to their tag again as one of the favourites. Their performances in the warm up games against Tunisia and Switzerland have not been great but it’s now 20 games unbeaten and the current (and now departing) coach has yet to taste defeat since assuming control after the last European Championships.

Portugal v Spain Betting Tips

The last time these two nations bet was all the way back in the semi final of the 2012 European Championships, which is somewhat surprising considering the close proximity to each other. It was of course the Spanish who were victorious on that occasion on their way to winning a second successive European title but what will be the outcome this time and more importantly what are the best betting tips in this Spain-Portugal match?!

Although Portugal are the current European champions, it’s Spain who are fancied to do better in this World Cup and it’s hard to argue that. The biggest question for the Spanish is who will be leading their line as they have used a number of players in the central striking position and none of them have really made it their own. The smart money is Diego Costa getting the nod for the first game but I am not convinced he suits this style of play and it has actually disrupted the flow of play at times. That will play into Portugal’s hands who will look to break up the game as much as possible and put their opponents out of their stride. Their threat will be mainly through Ronaldo of course and he will be up against his club captain Sergio Ramos which is sure to be a titanic battle.

I’m predicting a very tight encounter in this one with it being both nations first game and them wanting to give little way, my tip for Portugal and Spain is under 2.5 goals.
