Portugal Preview – Can Portugal defend their title?
The reigning Nations League champions, Portugal, will begin the defence of their title on Saturday evening when they entertain Croatia with the hosts no doubt looking to get their campaign off to a winning start against a side whom they beat 1-0 some four years ago in the European Championships.
Portugal remained unbeaten in the group stage of the Nations League against the likes of Italy and Poland and then progressed through to the final thanks to a resounding 3-1 win over Switzerland in the semi-finals before sealing the title with a 1-0 win over Netherlands in the final.
However, despite their dominance, Portugal had to make do with the runners-up spot in Group B of the subsequent Euro qualifiers to Ukraine, although the Portuguese suffered just one defeat throughout the group stages, while also being unbeaten in their last 13 matches at home in all competitions (which includes winning their last four on the trot).
Croatia Preview – Can Croatia spoil Portugal’s party?
It was a fairly ordinary campaign for Croatia in the first ever Nations League competition as they ended up finishing bottom of Group 4, three points behind group winners, England, and two points adrift of runners-up, Spain, as they collected just the one win during the group fixtures.
That win came in the shape of a 3-2 home win against Spain which prevented their opponents from progressing to the knockout rounds, but better was to come from Croatia as they topped Group E in the Euro qualifiers, winning five of their eight group matches and losing just once.
With just one defeat out of their last 19 matches on home soil, Croatia are an extremely hard team to beat in their own backyard, but the same can’t be said on their travels as Croatia have managed to collect just one win from their previous eight matches overall which was a 4-0 win at Slovakia, but defeats at France, Spain, England and Hungary suggest Portugal could also be too strong for them here.
