Preston North End extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to seven matches during the week when they recorded a very handy 2-1 win away at Hull City, and they return to Deepdale for the visit of beleaguered Sunderland this afternoon.
This impressive run of form under manager, Alex Neil, has lifted the home side up into fifth place and they still remain unbeaten on home turf with a solid looking home record of 3-2-0 6/1 which includes four clean sheets and wins over Sheffield Wednesday, Reading and league leaders, Cardiff City.
In addition, Preston have made Deepdale a fortress as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last 16 matches on home soil, and they’ll certainly fancy their chances against a seriously struggling Sunderland outfit today.
Visitors Sunderland were touted to be among the favourites for automatic promotion from the Championship and bounce straight back up to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but the Black Cats’ season hasn’t lived up to the hype so far.
In fact, Sunderland have made a disastrous start to their Championship campaign as they sit second from bottom in the league table with just one win from their first ten league matches of the season, and having lost six of their last seven matches overall, the pressure is being heaped upon manager, Simon Grayson.
Grayson will face his former club this afternoon in what is now a ‘must win’ match for Sunderland – defeat here this afternoon could see Grayson face the axe, and the signs ahead of this encounter are not good, particularly after their heavy midweek 5-2 defeat away at Ipswich Town.
