Marseille, meanwhile, have tasted defeat on each of their previous three visits to Paris – so, is there any hope whatsoever of an upset in the French capital?

PSG Preview – Newfound defensive resolve adding to Parisien lure?

Unsurprisingly, PSG (1st – W8 D0 L2, GF21 GA5) are top of Ligue 1. Rightly so according to Expected Goals, with their process all over the pitch (xGF of 2.70 and xGA of 0.60) having been at an incredibly high standard all season. This, let’s not forget, was achieved without the fabled triumvirate of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe featuring in a lot of their games, which is testament to the strength in depth now available to coach Thomas Tuchel.

There are much more difficult jobs in football than managing the blank cheque book that is Paris Saint-Germain. Even so, Tuchel deserves some credit for transforming a formerly top-heavy team that was too often reliant on the big-money forwards firing into a balanced and well-organised unit, now as likely to grind out victories to nil than it is blowing teams away. They have opted for the latter lately, winning their previous three matches whilst scoring a minimum of four goals.

The thrashing of Club Brugge in Belgium during the week, winning 5-0 as Kylian Mbappe netted a second-half hat-trick, made it five successive wins in all competition. In 2019/20 so far, Les Parisiens have won eleven of thirteen competitive games (W11 L2) – ten of which without conceding, which is astonishing! However, defeats in Rennes (2-1) and at home to Reims (0-2), both in Ligue 1 and out of nowhere, are perhaps an indication that for all their undoubted quality in abundance there does remain the occasional rotten performance lurking.

Marseille Preview – Can Villas-Boas mastermind statement victory?

The much-maligned Andre Villas-Boas, who has somehow forged a decade-long managerial career despite several high-profile failures, is now in his seventh post, this time at Marseille (4th – W4 D4 L2, GF12 GA11). In the two months he has been in charge of first-team affairs, the Portuguese coach has a 40% win ratio in Ligue 1 and guided the club to within two points of second place. Not bad in fairness.

Three successive victories either side of September was undoubtedly the highlight of Villas-Boas’ short stint. However, last weekend’s 2-0 success earned at home to Strasbourg – the first occasion this season that Marseille had won any game by a margin greater than a single goal – would halt a four-game run without a win (D3 L1). Away from home it is no win in two (D1 L1), since coming out on top in a seven goal thriller at Monaco (3-4).

At home, L’OM have seen all five league fixtures produce no more than two goals. On their travels however, three of five have breached the three goals mark (W2 D2 L1), with Marseille conceding three goals themselves on two separate occasions – at Monaco, of course, but also in their latest encounter away to Amiens (3-1). Considering they have also shipped exactly three goals on each of their last three league visits to Paris when facing Les Parisiens, these are ominous times.

PSG V Marseille Key Facts:

  • PSG have won eight of their ten Ligue 1 fixtures this season – seven without even conceding a goal.
  • Marseille sit fourth in the Ligue 1 table (W4 D4 L2), losing just once away from home (W2 D2 L1).
  • The last three league meetings in Paris have all gone the way of the home side, with PSG winning 3-0, 3-0 and, more recently, 3-1.

Betting Summary

Whisper it quietly but PSG are beginning to look the real deal. European contenders even. There is a measured approach to their play the like of which hasn’t been seen before, with ten of their eleven victories in all competitions this season earned without conceding a goal. The coach, Thomas Tuchel, deserves credit for this transformation and his team are already five clear points clear in Ligue 1 (W8 D0 L2, GF21 GA5), although a couple of shock defeats shows they are not infallible.

Marseille, under Andre Villas-Boas, are still to truly convince but, nonetheless, are quietly having a decent campaign. L’OM occupy fourth in Ligue 1 (W4 D4 L2, GF12 GA11) and have only lost the one game away from home, although did ship three goals on two separate occasions in said matches, and against teams nowhere near the standard of PSG.

The bet which makes the most amount of appeal is a home win to nil, with that particular bet already turning a tidy profit in 2019/20. However, Marseille will carry an offensive threat, through Argentine striker Dario Benedetto in particular, who accounts for four of their seven away goals. An alternative, therefore, could be PSG & Over 2.5 Match Goals – which would have landed in all three previous league encounters staged in Paris between the two teams.
