Preview: In a repeat of last season’s final, Bayern Munich travel to a venue they are yet to win at in four attempts looking to overhaul a 3-2 aggregate deficit sustained in Germany six days earlier. Will PSG hold on to this slender advantage, as well as their nerve, when the sides reconvene at the Parcs des Princes in Paris?

Paris Saint-Germain – Odds stacked in Ligue 1 side’s favour?

On a brisk, wintry evening in Munich it was Kylian Mbappe who provided the fire with two contrasting finishes – one an emphatic strike that was too powerful for Bayern stopper Manuel Neuer to keep out, the other a pinpoint effort that bamboozled the Germany number one. It means a second successive semi-final, having appeared in their first since 1995 last term, beckons for Les Parisiens.

Even a slender defeat on the night, say a 1-0 or 2-1, would still ensure the Ligue 1 champions progress on the away goals rule, at the expense of the side who beat them in last season’s final. Not that they will be playing for such a scenario. Meanwhile history is also on their side. Only once before, in 2018-19 when bowing out on away goals to Man Utd, has PSG not progressed after winning the first-leg away from home.

Furthermore, PSG remain unbeaten when hosting German opposition, winning eight of nine such encounters including a 1-0 victory on Matchday 4 over RB Leipzig – a team hot on Bayern’s heels in the Bundesliga title race. A goal on the night would also strengthen their position in the tie and it is heartening, from a Parisian persuasion, to know they have netted in their last 23 European matches at Parc des Princes.

Bayern Munich – Can anyone fill Lewandowki’s huge boots?

Work to do for the defending European champions. Despite laying siege to the PSG goal inside Allianz Arena, Hansi Flick’s side could only convert two of their 31 attempts on goal, of these a staggering 12 found the target. The combination of stoic goalkeeping and wayward finishing in the absence of Europe’s most prolific marksman, Robert Lewandowski, in part responsible for the German’s current predicament.

Bayern will need to score a minimum of twice at the Parcs des Princes. No small feat, even for them. The reigning German Bundesliga champions, and current league leaders, possess a record not too dissimilar to their Die Rotten moniker, having lost all four prior visits to the Parc des Princes when facing PSG. A task made all the more difficult in the continued absence of their talismanic forward.

A rousing 4-1 victory against Lazio in the first-leg of this season’s Round of 16 extended their unbeaten away record in the Champions League to seventeen (W13 D4). So we can be sure this tie is far from done and dusted. Moreover, eight of their previous nine victories in all competitions were by the desired two-goal margin. Although they have now conceded in nine of their last eleven encounters (W7 D2 L2).

Paris Saint-Germain Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

For the second successive round, PSG are looking to consolidate an outstanding result from the first-leg. Mauricio Pochettino’s men thrashed Barcelona 4-1 at Camp Nou in the Round of 16 before withstanding near constant pressure in the return leg in Paris, where the Spanish side were unfortunate to only score once (xG: PSG 1.58 – 2.21 BAR – with most of PSG’s total stemming from a dubious penalty).

PSG Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • In four previous visits to Paris to face PSG at the Parc des Princes, Bayern Munich are yet to record a win, losing all four such encounters.
  • PSG are unbeaten in nine home European matches versus German sides (W8 D1); Bayern won nine of the last eleven away matches versus French opposition, the two exceptions were both against PSG, however.es thereafter.
  • Kylian Mbappe has now scored eight times across his last four Champions League appearances and now trails only Erling Haaland, with ten, in this season’s scoring charts.

Bayern should have won the first leg (BAY 4.28 – 1.65 PSG), but will have been encouraged by what Barca did here in the last round. That being said, the hosts boast what the visitors currently do not: a renowned striker in red hot form that is fit and available. Kylian Mbappe has eight Champions League goals in his last four appearances and, with spot-kicks in his locker, can inspire Pochettino’s team into the semi-finals.
