Preview: Round 14 of the 2020/21 French Ligue 1 season wraps up in Paris on Sunday night with a fixture that has all the raw materials for being a potential classic. Will Lyon be able to extend their terrific run of winning results, against a PSG side which has looked more fallible than usual in the league of late.

PSG Preview – Focus now switches from Europe to Ligue 1?

Fresh from a 5-1 win against Turkish Super Lig champions Istanbul Basaksehir that sent them into the last-sixteen of the Champions League, Ligue 1 frontrunners PSG (W9 D1 L3) will look to put clear daylight between themselves and a potential title challenger when they welcome third in the table Lyon to Parc des Princes on Sunday evening. The Parisiens went into round 14 holding a two-point cushion at the summit.

That narrow advantage will likely have been eroded by the time of their fixture, though, with second placed Lille presented with a winnable, if awkward, home encounter against a resurgent Bordeaux on Sunday afternoon. However, PSG aren’t the sort of team to worry unduly over what others are doing, and with their pursuit of European glory put on ice until February, the weeks ahead could see them really come to the fore.

Thomas Tuchel will be banking on this being the case. Lately, his players have allowed complacency to creep in – perhaps with their focus slanted in favour of a European campaign that hanged in the balance until Wednesday – leading to points being squandered to Monaco and Bordeaux prior to last week’s 3-1 win at in-form Montpellier. A flattering scoreline based on chances created (xG: MON 1.97 – 1.54 PSG).

PSG & Both Teams to Score

Lyon Preview – Burgeoning front-three will pose problems in Paris?

Thirteen years since the last of their seven Ligue 1 titles, are Lyon (W7 D5 L1) emerging as credible challengers to a throne that has taken up near permanent residence in Paris for much of the past decade. On the back of six wins in seven games, and with a team appearing more settled than it has in recent times, they deserve to be taken seriously – the problem with that is, opponents from now on will start doing the same.

Rest assured, PSG won’t be underestimating them on Sunday. Yet there have been notable chinks in the champions’ armour that this fluent Lyon side could well seize upon in Paris. From seven clean sheets in eight Ligue 1 games to none in their last three and five conceded; this will be music to the ears of Memphis Depay, Tino Kadewere and Karl Toko Ekambi, Les Gones’ dynamic, slick front-three.

Losing once all season, away to Montpellier in mid-September, Lyon will arrive in the capital in scintillating form: unbeaten in ten having won all of the last four. The three goals that came in last week’s 3-1 victory in Metz (xG: MET 1.33 – 1.52 LYO) giving them an average of 2.4 goals per game across their last seven matches (W6). Netting on at least one occasion in the last nine, and all but one of six away (W3 D3 L1).

PSG Vs Lyon Betting Advice

The biggest game of the weekend in France has the potential to be humdinger, but only if both sides show courage in their attacking convictions, something which was visibly absent in their goalless Coupe de France final in July. Prior to that, though, there had been 12 goals across two league and cup encounters; Lyon valiantly going down 4-2 in Paris in the league last term without any of their current forward trio in the initial XI.

PSG Vs France – Key Facts:

  • Five goals conceded across their last three league games (W1 D1 L1) is two more than PSG allowed in their first ten Ligue 1 games of 2020/21.
  • Whilst accumulating six wins from their last seven Ligue 1 matches, Lyon have been scoring at a rate of more than two a game (2.4).
  • Since a 5-1 win for PSG in Paris in December 2015, seven of the pair’s last nine Ligue 1 meetings have featured Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams Scoring.

Lyon will be the fresher of the sides with no midweek football, however, PSG look something like their best in Wednesday’s dismantling of Istanbul Basaksehir at the Parc des Prince. That a second quick-fire win, having beaten Montpellier on the road last Sunday too. I suspect PSG’s superior all round quality will tell even with extra mileage in the legs, but don’t dismiss Lyon from making a proper fist of it in Paris.
