Preview: Last season, the Champions League run of PSG came to a halt in the last four at the hands of Man City. The sides haven’t had to wait long for the renewal, though, drawn alongside each other in Group A. Can Man City maintain their undefeated tag (W3 D2) versus the French side when the pair meet in Paris?

PSG – Yet to convince but mostly winning?

An attacking triumvirate comprising Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi – who, between them, total 188 goals in the Champions League – looked tantalising when team sheets were revealed ahead of Matchday 1’s trip to Belgium. So it was to everyone’s consternation when a star-studded PSG line-up ambled to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Club Brugge, leaving the French side with work to do in Group A.

That draw is the only blot on their copybook this season. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are a perfect eight from eight in Ligue 1, despite not playing all that convincingly at times and requiring 90th-minute winners to see off Lyon and Metz recently. Defensively there are question marks, as while a return of 0.88 conceded per game may not seem all that disconcerting, they do struggle to keep the opposition at arm’s length.

PSG have only recorded three clean sheets in nine competitive outings so far this season, conceding at least once in sixty-six per cent of matches. Considering how formidable upcoming opponents Man City are in the defensive third, this could spell trouble seeing as how the Parisiens managed just three goals across five previous meetings with the Cityzens, failing to win any of these match-ups (D2 L3).

Manchester City – Cityzens have Parisiens’ card marked?

Beaten finalists in 2020-21. Man City begun a fresh bid for a maiden Champions League title in typically rampaging fashion, plundering the six goals at home to the second best side in Germany last time around, RB Leipzig. As good as they were going forward, Pep Guardiola won’t have been pleased seeing his goalkeeper beaten three times – only two fewer than in the whole of last season’s tournament (13 matches).

Since suffering a rare bad day at the office from a defensive perspective in that aforementioned clash, it has been business as usual. Victory over Chelsea at the weekend was a big statement with regards to this season’s exceedingly tough to call Premier League title race. That they did so to nil was all the more impressive, limiting the European champions to no shots on target in West London.

That made it five clean sheets in seven games in all competitions, winning the last two on the road 1-0. Both were in notoriously difficult fixtures (vs Chelsea and Leicester City) suggesting City are more than capable of repeating last season’s narrow 2-1 victory here in Paris. With that being their third successive win against the French side, all since 2016, conceding only the solitary goal in these fixtures.

PSG Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

This promises to be another closely fought encounter between two of the most talented and deepest squads in Europe, both of whom arrive on Matchday 2 in fine form. PSG haven’t lost a league or cup game all season, registering seven wins from eight. Club Brugge are the only team to prevent Pochettino’s from winning thus far. In Paris they are a perfect four from four, scoring 12 and conceding three.

PSG Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • Tuesday’s encounter in Paris will mark the sixth between the clubs, with Man City yet to lose (W3 D2) but conceding on both visits to Paris (W1 D1).
  • PSG have won all eight of their domestic fixtures so far this season in Ligue 1. Man City are unbeaten in seven in all competitions, scoring 24 and conceding four.
  • The previous two times (in 2016 and 2021) Man City travelled to Paris to take on PSG, the English side had to come from behind to record a positive outcome.

Recent meetings would indicate that it is the English side holding the upper hand. Man City are seeking their fourth consecutive victory in this fixture, having won home and away in the last four of this competition last term. Pep Guardiola’s men had to come from behind in Paris, however, as they also did on their only other visit here, for a group stage match-up in 2016-17 which resulted in a 2-2 scoreline.
