Paris Saint-German Preview – Simply too irresistible in Paris?

The reigning Ligue 1 title holders could only watch on as mere spectators as their lead atop the league was whittled down to five points at the weekend. This was a direct consequence of their fixture in Monaco being postponed due to adverse weather conditions. What it does mean is PSG (1st – W11 D0 L3, GF30 GA8) have had a whole week to recover from their most recent exertions, which happened to be the poorest performance of the season: a 2-2 draw away to Real Madrid in the Champions League last Tuesday.

Les Parisiens should be keen to atone for what was an abomination of a display defensively in Madrid, conceding a host of quality chances. The calibre of opposition needs to be factored in, of course, but it was very uncharacteristic of a side that has improved tremendously at the back this season. The defensive process of Thomas Tuchel’s side is easily the best in the country, as emphasised by the fact nine clean sheets were kept in fourteen Ligue 1 encounters thus far – with all six wins as the home side ‘to nil’.

No team comes close to matching their exploits at home, meanwhile, scoring more often (18) and conceding fewer times (2) than anyone in Ligue 1 this term. Four of their six victories at their Parc des Princes were by three clear goals or more, beating Lille 2-0 last time out there through goals from Mauro Icardi and Angel Di Maria. When Reims won there on 25 September, it was a huge shock, one Les Parisiens will undoubtedly be determined to avoid for the remainder of the term.

Nantes Preview – Another competitive showing forthcoming?

Last season, Nantes (6th – W7 D2 L6, GF11 GA14) were one of only a handful of teams to beat PSG in Ligue 1. That was, however, at home, not that the 3-2 victory was any less impressive. They would also give a very solid account of themselves in the reverse fixture, nullifying the greatest attack in the country and restricting it to a miserly one goal in a 1-0 loss. So this team does have recent experience for making this a more competitive fixture than bookmakers expect.

Nevertheless, this is another huge ask. Just as well then that Les Canaris (The Canaries) have rediscovered some vague form ahead of making their way to the capital. Victory at the weekend made it seven wins for the season and lifted them back up to sixth in the standings. The final score of 2-1 was a lot closer than it needed to be, considering the opposition were bottom of the table Toulouse who also had to play with a numerical disadvantage for almost 70 minutes following an early red card.

A win and a draw from their last two league encounters is more encouraging form than the four straight defeats which preceded them. Meanwhile not since beating Lyon 1-0, who were in crisis at that time, have they celebrated victory on the road (D2 L1 since). Christian Gourcuff’s men were held to a 1-1 draw by Brest in their latest away encounter, with Kalifa Coulibaly on target for the third occasion away from home this season (50 per cent of his team’s overall away tally).

Paris Saint-German Vs Nantes Key Facts:

  • All six of PSG‘s victories as the home side in Ligue 1 this season were without conceding a goal.
  • Across the last six Ligue 1 fixtures, Nantes have registered only four points (W1 D1 L4) and failed to score on three occasions.
  • Last season, Nantes produced a genuine shock when beating the French champions 3-2 at home, but were edged out in Paris losing 1-0 – their eleventh consecutive away defeat to PSG in Ligue 1.

Betting Summary

The champions will appreciate this return to action, having not featured at the weekend due to severe weather conditions leading to the unusual decision to postpone the meeting in Monaco. Therefore a seemingly fresher PSG (1/6 Bet365) go seeking a third consecutive Ligue 1 win. As the home side this season, Les Parisiens have won six of seven – all without conceding a goal, as was the case when beating the same opposition 1-0 in this same fixture last season.

Nantes (20/1 Ladbrokes) would inflict one of only a handful of losses on PSG last term, albeit at home. Not since 2002 have they beaten them in Paris, though, losing on all eleven subsequent visits in Ligue 1. Ominous stuff. Recent form has picked up lately with four points from the last six available. But problems remain on the road, collecting one point from the previous three away fixtures (D1 L2). They’ve also scored one goal or less in six of their seven away contests so far.

Goals have really not been Nante’s speciality this season, scoring fewer (14 – less than a goal per game on average) than any side in the top half of the table. This does not bode well ahead of facing by far and away the best defensive process in the country. PSG can be expected to ease to another home victory.
