PSG Preview – Fortress Paris to ensure no further slip-up?

It didn’t take the men from Paris long to regain top spot in Ligue 1, recovering from losing their opening two fixtures to then record seven straight victories by a quite ridiculous aggregate score of 23-1. Put simply, PSG are back to something resembling top form domestically, winning to nil on six occasions, and are now two points in the clear of a chasing pack spearheaded by Lille and Rennes.

Although matters in Ligue 1 have run smoothly ever since back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Lens and Marseille in early September, in Europe it has been the polar opposite. PSG sit third in their group following Wednesday’s 2-1 loss to RB Leipzig over in Germany, as Angel Di Maria’s missed penalty and two disallowed goals came back to haunt Les Parisiens who now have it all to do in order to reach the latter stages.

Midweek was a combination of misfortune (see above), indiscipline (Idrissa Gueye and Presnel Kimpembe were both shown red) and absentees (Kylian Mbappe and Neymar adding to an already extensive injury list). It is Thomas Tuchel’s job to find solutions, though, as he has to this weekend. The backdrop of the Parc des Princes should help: PSG winning 15 of 18 (W15 D1 L2) Ligue 1 matches here since the start of last season.

Rennes Preview – Winning momentum well and truly dissipated?

Julien Stephan had overseen four wins through the first five rounds as his Rennes side quickly assumed the role of early frontrunners in Ligue 1. They have since fallen to third in the table, perched three points behind leaders PSG after a run of one win in four (W1 D2 L1). A noticeable drop-off that has coincided with their participation in the Champions League, which hasn’t gone as well as they would have liked either.

For the second group game running, Rennes were soundly beaten, this time by Chelsea, losing 3-0 in England as The Bretons again delivered a limp display lacking in attacking ambition or defensive resilience. The previous week saw them lucky to escape Spain with only a narrow defeat to Sevilla. So these are slightly worrying times for a side which has clinched one win in their previous six competitive outings.

That sole success coming against Stade Brest last weekend, in what was another unconvincing display. As while they did edge the xG battle at their Stade Pierre-Mauroy, it took a couple of goals from set-plays to turn around a 1-0 deficit against a side that had lost three of its four away league games this term. The continued absences of Eduardo Camavinga and central defender Daniel Rugani clearly impacting their cause.

PSG Vs Rennes Betting Advice

Both sides come into this contest in downtrodden mood. PSG, who are set to be without Kylian Mbappe and Neymar once more, were downed 2-1 in Germany in midweek by RB Leipzig as elsewhere, in England, Rennes were comprehensively beaten 3-0 away at Chelsea. The latter are also missing key players, none more integral to their system than 17-year-old France international Eduardo Camavinga.

PSG Vs Rennes – Key Facts:

  • Of PSGs seven Ligue 1 victories this season, six were either to nil or by a 3+ margin, while they also netted three or more goals five times.
  • Rennes have scored in all nine Ligue 1 fixtures this season but have kept just the one clean sheet, which has contributed to both teams scoring on eight occasions.
  • Eight of the previous nine head-to-head encounters between the clubs, in all competitions, produced both teams scoring including the last three held in Ligue 1.

PSG are targeting their eighth consecutive victory in Ligue 1 and should, based on the recent struggles of this Rennes side, encounter few problems achieving that. However, the visitors have retained a useful habit of scoring this season, doing so in all nine fixtures thus far with nine coming from four away matches. So it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that a potentially weary PSG concede for only the fourth time this season.
