PSV Prediction – Can PSV finish the job at home?

The Dutch hosts look to be making the most of their second chance at European football as they secured a valuable 1-0 win away from home in last week’s 1st leg in Norway against Haugesund.

After finishing as runners-up to Eredivisie title winners, Ajax, at the end of last season’s Dutch top flight season, this enabled PSV to qualify for the qualifying rounds of this season’s Champions League.

However, although they recorded a 3-2 home win against Basel in the 1st leg, the Dutch club suffered a 2-1 defeat in the return leg in Switzerland which saw them crash out of the competition.

However, PSV get a second bite of this season’s European cherry as they enter the Europa League at the 3rd qualifying round stage and they’ve made a good start in their bid to make it to the group stages of this competition.

PSV registered a 1-0 win in last week’s away leg, and with the away-goal rule firmly on their side ahead of this deciding leg in Eindhoven, Thursday night’s hosts look to be well placed to progress to the play-offs of the Europa League.

The hosts come into this clash having recorded a 3-1 home win over Den Haag in the Eredivisie on the weekend, and PSV have lost just 2 of their last 17 matches at their Philips Stadion in all competitions.

Haugesund Prediction – Can Haugesund cause upset?

The Norwegian side have progressed through the early qualifying rounds of the Europa League to make it through to this 3rd qualifying round tie against Dutch outfit, PSV, but it looks like their European adventure could be coming to a close.

Early wins in the competition over Irish side, Cliftonville in a 6-1 aggregate win, followed by a narrow 3-2 aggregate victory against Austrian side, Sturm Graz, saw Haugesund through to the latter stages of these qualifying rounds.

However, last week’s 1st leg 1-0 defeat at home to tonight’s opponents, PSV, has placed them in a precarious position as they make their way over to the Netherlands where they’ll attempt to overturn this 1-goal deficit.

Recent results suggest this could be a tough ask as they’ve lost 3 of their last 4 matches overall with defeats suffered against Sturm Graz (2nd leg of Europa League), PSV (in last week’s 1st leg of Europa League) and a 1-0 loss at home to Ranheim in the Norwegian Eliteserien.

Haugesund have played just 6 away ties in the Europa League which have produced mixed results, but their two wins have been registered at relative minnows, Sarajevo and Cliftonville, while defeats at Lech Poznan and Sturm Graz perhaps indicate a tough 90 minutes ahead of them at PSV tonight.

Key-Facts – PSV v Haugesund

  • PSV have lost just 2 of their last 17 matches at their Philips Stadion
  • PSV will look to record a third win on the trot in all competitions
  • Haugesund have lost 3 of their last 4 matches overall in all competitions

Betting Tips Verdict

PSV with home advantage should easily account for Haugesund here and will be looking to get off to a quick start here to put the tie to bed.
