Azerbaijan side, Qarabag, will return to their Az?rsun Arena in Baku for Wednesday night’s first round qualifying second leg with Slovenian outfit, Olimpija, with the hosts holding a slender one-goal advantage.
Qarabag will have been boosted by that important 1-0 win in last week’s first leg because although they hold a massive 16-point lead at the top of the Azerbaijan Premyer Liqa, recent results have been less impressive or convincing.
With just three wins from their last nine matches overall in all competitions, Wednesday night’s hosts will be keen to pick up where they left off in Slovenia last week by getting a result here which will send them into the second qualifying round.
Olimpija will face a difficult task of overcoming Qarabag in their own backyard on Wednesday night, and they also have the fact that Qarabag scored that all-important away goal against them too as they make their way to Baku.
Following three draws in pre-season friendlies against Lokomotiva Zagreb, Ferencvaros and Al Ahly, last week’s first leg loss means that Olimpija come into this second leg without a win from their last four matches.
In addition, two defeats from their three Champions League ties played to date isn’t a great pedigree to draw from, and their lack of experience could be the deciding factor in determining the outcome of this encounter.
In their only previous two-legged Champions League tie against Trencin, Olimpija finished all square with the Slovakian outfit 6-6 on aggregate, but it was Trencin’s four goals scored in the first leg which sent them out, and lightning could strike twice again in this fixture, with Qarabag already scoring that vital away goal against them.
