We now enter the third qualifying round of the Champions League this week, and my next pick features Azerbaijan league champions, Qarabag, taking on Moldovan side, Sheriff Tiraspol, at their Az?rsun Arena.
Qarabag wrapped up the domestic Azerbaijan Premyer Liqa by a convincing 10-point margin over runners-up Qabala, and they’ve continued their title winning form into the Champions League qualifying rounds so far.
The hosts registered a heavy 6-0 win on aggregate over Georgian club Samtredia in the second qualifying round to progress to this stage of the competition, and they need to be respected on home turf where they suffered just one defeat throughout the whole of the recent season. Look out for striker Ndlovu as the main goalscoring threat for the home side.
Visitors Sheriff Tiraspol finished runners-up in the Moldovan domestic Divizia Nationala which would have granted them a Europa League spot, but thanks to a Cup final win over Zaria 5-0, they have qualified for the Champions League.
Sheriff squeezed past Albanian outfit, Kukesi, in the second qualifying round as they drew the tie 2-2 overall, but Sheriff’s goal in their 2-1 defeat away in the second leg ensured they progressed through to the third qualifying round on the away goals rule.
However, this is where their Champions League journey may well end as they now face a strong Qarabag side in their own back-yard in this first leg, and they’ll do extremely well to go into the second leg still on level terms I fancy.
