Qatar – Maroons operating at high level at both ends of pitch?

Seven points were enough for Qatar to finish atop Group C, netting nine times – more than any other side in the tournament – in what turned out to be the highest scoring group. Aside from a wild six-goal exchange with Panama, the Maroons have played with a measure of calm and control which was best exemplified in the 2-0 victory over a useful Honduras in the closing match of the group.

All in all, it is impossible not to be impressed with our guest’s endeavours thus far. More goals than all their rivals, a couple of clean sheets, and some standout performances right across the team. Their reward for pipping Honduras to top spot in Group C was a quarter-final with the runners-up from Group A, but should they emerge unscathed, they will be a handful for either Jamaica or the USA in the last four.

That takes their run of games without losing up into double figures (W8 D2), remaining unbeaten in both friendlies and a competitive environment since a 2-1 scoreline against South Korea in November 2020. Equally impressive, moreover, the Asian Cup holders have conceded in just one game in their last six – the opening contest of this tournament – recording five wins to nil during this lean spell.

El Salvador – Defence to have big say on any potential progress?

As the second highest ranked nation in Group A, a runners-up placement was par for the course for Hugo Perez and his El Salvador team. It was very nearly more than that, though, denied top spot when unsuccessful in securing the point that was needed last time out against Mexico. Underdogs on that occasion, they played with the sort of grit and defensive resilience that will serve them well in the knockouts.

However, La Selecta have never before made it further than the quarter-finals in five previous ventures to this stage. More recently bowing out to the USA in 2017. So while it isn’t exactly uncharted water, history dictates this could be their curtain call. However, just the one goal conceded all tournament will inspire confidence that they can, at the very least, keep this close, or possibly even take it the distance.

Should they somehow emerge victorious, though, there is every chance we can predict the method of their success. All of their previous seventeen victories across all competitions, including the group stage wins over Guatemala and Trinidad & Tobago that form part of a strong record in 2021 (W7 D2 L2), came courtesy of the defence not allowing the opposition to score. That is remarkable consistency.

Qatar Vs El Salvador Betting Advice

If Qatar, as the sole non-North American representative, were an unknown quantity before this Gold Cup, they certainly are no more. Coached by former Barcelona youth manager Felix Sanchez, the Maroons play with a real togetherness and cohesion that set them apart from the other sides in Group C. So much so they start as favourites to reach the semi-finals. It is difficult to really argue with that either.

Qatar Vs El Salvador – Key Facts:

  • Topping Group C (W2 D1), ahead of Honduras, scoring the most tournament goals (9) whilst recording two wins to nil, Qatar could be a nuisance in the knockout rounds.
  • This will be the sixth quarter-final for El Salvador, who are bidding to reach their first semi-final after a runners-up finish in Group A (W2 L1), behind Mexico.
  • Just one of the last six matches that involved Qatar produced Both Teams to Score. El Salvador fare even for this, meanwhile, with none of their last nine games obliging.

No team has plundered more goals at this summer’s CONCACAF showpiece than Qatar, but they’ve also registered back-to-back clean sheets since enduring a rare bad day at the office, defensively, in the 3-3 draw with Panama. That was the only game of their last six to feature goals at both end of the pitch, while this is an even rare occurrence for El Salvador. La Selecta’s past nine encounters all concluded with no more than one team among the goals.
