Qatar – Gold Cup top scorers won’t be brushed aside?

With their 3-2 victory against El Salvador in the quarter-finals, Qatar became the fifth country outside the CONCACAF region to reach the last four as an invitee. Now, they take on six-time winners USA for a place in the final, which will be against defending champions Mexico or this hugely improved Canadian team. The Maroons will be significant underdogs in either match up and that is again the case here.

Felix Sanchez’s men have played some swashbuckling football to make it this far, plundering a tournament best 12 goals. At least two more than any of the sides remaining in the competition. They have been suspect defensively, however, with clean sheets in wins over Grenada and Honduras offset by wild encounters with Panama and El Salvador, with all five goals conceded coming in the second period.

Those 12 scored were spread evenly across both halves, meanwhile. So they are the sort of team that opponents dare not go to sleep against, capable of striking at any given time. They are also very unlikely to go down without a fight. Having strung together at unbeaten campaign at this Gold Cup, the reigning Asian champions have subsequently stretched their streak without losing to eleven matches (W9 D2).

USA – 12th Gold Cup final hinges on miserly rearguard?

An eleventh consecutive Gold Cup semi-final appearance awaits the Stars and Stripes following their gritty performance at the quarter-final stage in a 1-0 victory against Jamaica. Matthew Hoppe popped up with the decisive goal seven minutes from the end, although probably should have made the breakthrough earlier after spurning a number of presentable opportunities to register his first senior goal.

That made it three 1-0 scorelines in four outings, dispatching Haiti and Canada during a table-topping group campaign that also featured a 6-1 thrashing of lowly Martinique. So it hasn’t been the bulldozing tournament we have come to expect from USA in what is perennially a vastly inferior field. Nevertheless, they’ve continually found ways to win which is a positive sign ahead of a banana skin match up.

Hoppe’s late strike – a brave back post header – was the first time the USA’s opening goal at this tournament hadn’t been inside the game’s opening fifteen minutes. Gregg Berhalter’s side have typically been electric starters but seemed to adopt a more cautious approach in the first knockout round. We could see something similar in an effort to contain this free-flowing and free-scoring Qatar outfit.

Qatar Vs USA Betting Advice

Like many, I have been massively impressed with the performances from Qatar. Their technical quality is above what I assumed they were capable of while their attack, outside of boasting the best scoring figures at the tournament, has pace, trickery, excellent chemistry and is a real handful. This will easily be their biggest test so far, though, facing a USA side that has allowed one goal in four games thus far.

Qatar Vs USA – Key Facts:

  • In the first meeting ever staged between the countries, both arrive with long unbeaten streaks to protect. Qatar are 11 games without defeat (W9 D2) while USA are up to seven (W6 D1 when excluding extra-time).
  • No team at this summer’s Gold Cup has hit the back of the opposing net with greater regularity than Qatar (12), netting three more than USA.
  • However, only Mexico have picked up more clean sheets thus far than USA, with three of the Stars and Stripes’ four tournament victories being 1-0 scorelines.

Some of the contests involving Qatar were wild. However, I don’t envisage USA making this an end to end duel in Texas. All but one of their Gold Cup matches contained a solitary goal, recording a defensive shutout in four of the last five. It also slips under the radar that Qatar are capable of putting in a defensive shift: of their current 12-match unbeaten streak, seven featured a Qatar clean sheet.
