Queen of the South Preview – Can Queens make home advantage count and get the win?

Queen of the South will start this season in really buoyant mood following their survival in the playoffs last season. The club made the somewhat controversial decision to change managers between the regular season ending the playoffs beginning. Gary Naysmith was relieved of his duties and Allan Johnston was brought back for a second spell in charge. The change had the desired effect as Queens rediscovered their form at just the right time. Johnston will now be looking to leave that season well behind them and concentrate on a much more positive campaign this time around. Once again, their hopes will rest mainly on their star striker Stephen Dobbie. The former Swansea and Blackpool forward won the Championship Play of the Year award last season despite his club’s troubles. He may be 36 but his 21 goals in the league were crucial to Queens’ survival.

Dobbie has fond memories of playing in this competition, too, having notched eight goals in it last season. It was a major reason for Queens qualifying for the knockout phase and you have to feel that a similar return would put them close once again. There’s no doubt Dobbie could be playing at a higher level but the environment clearly brings the best out of him.

Motherwell Preview – Will ‘Well show their Premiership class and grab victory?

Motherwell had something of a strange season in 2018/19. It was very much in two parts as they laboured in the first half of the season before coming on very strongly in the latter stages. That resurgence was led by David Turnbull and Jake Hastie, both of whom will be missing from their line-up on Saturday. Turnbull’s move to Celtic fell through because of injury and he has since undergone an operation whilst Hastie has joined Rangers. Such was their impressive run of form between Christmas and the end of the season that those two caught the eyes of the Glasgow clubs. Manager Stephen Robinson will have to find a way of replacing those goals, and also compensating for the loss of Curtis Main to Aberdeen.

Devante Cole has been brought in from Burton Albion and Robinson will be hoping that he can rediscover his form from earlier in his career. There has been a number of additions along with Cole’s arrival and these League Cup group games will be useful for knitting things together. There’s no doubt that Robinson will be looking for an extended run in the competition as well, though.

Queen of the South v Motherwell Betting Advice

These two clubs were drawn together in last season’s group stage with the game taking place at Fir Park. Motherwell ran out 2-0 winners on the occasion with both goals coming from Connor Sammon. He’s another who has moved on to pastures new in the close season. Queens will feel they have a much better chance this time around playing at home.  In spite of that loss they did qualify as one of the best runners up and that will be the aim again.

Being the Premiership side Motherwell are still very much the favourites to get their group stage off to a winning start. Their opponents will look to make home advantage count and they have been competitive in recent times against Premiership opposition. Queens faced top-flight opposition on five occasions last season and scored in four of them. They are more than capable of getting on the score sheet against Motherwell at home on Saturday as well.
