Queen of the South Preview – Can Thistle halt their winless run at seven to boost hopes of survival?

The situation is close to critical for Queen of the South following results in midweek. A 3-1 loss away to Inverness on Tuesday, coupled with Partick scoring a last minute equaliser means Queens are just two points off bottom spot, and have played a game more than Thistle. It’s looking very similar to last season when faced with the relegation playoffs to preserve their Championship status.
The appointment of Allan Johnston towards the end of last season was the difference in turning their fortunes around but it’s looking ominous for Johnston and his players just now.

Queens last win was back on the 28th of December, ironically enough against Ayr United. They won 2-1 at Somerset on that occasion. That victory was their third in four games so would not have expected to go 10 games without a win since – losing seven of them.
A major issue for Queen of the South this season has been their lack of goals. Stephen Dobbie has been plagued with injury throughout the season and has not been at his prolific best. They are the second lowest scorers in the league with 28 from the same number of matches.

Ayr United Preview – Will Dunfermilne continue good recent run and potentially close on fourth place?

Defeat to Dundee on Tuesday means Ayr have now dropped into fourth place and three points above Dunfermilne in the battle for top four. Fourth place brings with it entry to the promotion playoffs, which Ayr contested last season. Mark Kerr’s men do have a game in hand over the Pars but it looks set to be a very close encounter between now and the end of the campaign.

It’s also now just one win in their last six league games which is their worst run and one which will have to improve if they are to secure their place in the top four.

There has been a noticeable change of style since Kerr took over from Ian McCall earlier in the season. Ayr were one of the most entertaining and highest-scoring sides but they are much more pragmatic these days, evidenced by the fact that their last eight league games have yielded only 11 goals.

That sort of form has helped them accumulate more points on the road, taking seven points in three matches before defeat to Dundee. Kerr will be demanding a response from his team to that to avoid giving any further hopes to the teams chasing them.

Queen of the South vs Ayr United Betting Advice

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the two sides this year with Queens have the advantage of two wins to one. It’s a fixture which Queens have thrived in in recent years, especially at home. They have won nine of the last 11 at their home ground and will be desperate to extend that as they look to give themselves some breathing space at the bottom of the table.

Key Facts – Queen of the South vs Ayr United Betting Tip

  • Queens have managed just four wins out of 14 home league games this season
  • Ayr’s change of style has resulted in just 11 goals being scored in their last eight games
  • Queen of the South have won two of the previous three meetings this season

Ayr United supporters will be hoping that Tuesday’s away defeat was an aberration but this has not been a happy hunting ground. Four of Queens’ last six league games and seven of Ayr’s last eight games in the Championship have had two or less goals in them, making under 2.5 goals a standout bet on Friday.
