Queen of the South Preview – Can Queens overcome poor home form to reach semi-finals?

It’s been an up and down season for Queen of the South so far and that’s indicated by their current placing of sixth in the Championship. Three wins and five losses sees Queens sitting on nine points – five points outside the playoff places and the same number above bottom spot. Allan Johnston will be realistic about his team’s chances of finishing in the top four and his first objective will be staying clear of the relegation zone having finished in the bottom two in two of the last three years.

They did pick up an important win at the weekend when beating Dunfermilne at home having lost their previous two matches. It was their first home win of the league campaign and they will be hoping it lifts a burden off the players.

Queens defeated Broomhill 3-0 in the previous round of this competition in a game they were expected to win considering it was against a team out with the top four divisions in Scotland. Lee Connelly – who is in his first season at the club – scored in that game and has four goals so far. He’s proving a shrewd acquisition having joined from Sunderland.

Queen of the South have won the competition on two occasions with their most recent success coming back in 2013. Ironically they defeated Thistle on penalties in the final that year.

Partick Thistle Preview – Will Thistle keep themselves in hunt for first ever Challenge Cup success?

Thistle ended a run of three straight defeats in the Championship last weekend when beating Ayr United 4-0 at Firhill. Ian McCall’s men had lost to three of the top four prior to Saturday’s match, conceding eight goals in the process. In what has been a promising start to the season on their return to this level but those run of defeats are perhaps an indication of the difference in quality between the top teams in the league and the rest.

McCall will be happy enough sitting fifth and just a couple of points outside the playoff zone, especially as they face each of the bottom three in successive weeks.

Partick are the highest scorers in the Championship with 17 goals in eight matches however they also have the second worst defensive record (13). Veteran striker Brian Graham is forming a productive partnership with Zak Rudden. The two have eight goals in the league and 14 across all competitions.

It was a comfortable 2-0 win for Thistle in the previous round with Stranraer providing little in the way of opposition. They reached the semi-final 12 months ago and will be hoping to do the same this time around.

Queen of the South vs Partick Thistle Betting Advice

These teams met on the opening day of the league season in what remains one of the most entertaining games of the campaign. Thistle ended up winning 3-2 with the lead changing hands four times. A repeat of that would be most welcome. Considering Thistle’s games in the league are averaging 3.75 goals we will hopefully see a game with plenty of actions at both ends.

As alluded to above the teams met in the final of the Challenge Cup eight years ago, a game that ended with Queens winning the competition for a second time. Thistle have yet to lift the trophy and will be hoping this will be their year.
