Queens Park – Can Queens Park end a 40 year wait with a return to the second tier of Scottish football?

There has been serious investment in Queens Park over the last couple of years at this level so to see them finish fourth in League One was something of a surprise. But, what that did do was qualify them for the promotion playoffs and put them up against the ninth placed club in the Championship, Dunfermilne. A very cagey affair eventually seen Queens Park prevail 1-0 on aggregate and they are now one game away from returning to the second tier of Scottish football for the first time since 1982.

It has been a whirlwind start to life at the club for Owen Coyle, who only took over as manager last month and having seen off one of his former clubs as a player in the semi-final, he will be hoping to make it a quick double against another.

The Spiders have been strong at home without being overly dominant. They have lost just two home games in the league, winning seven of the other 16. No team drew more than them (18 in total) and they had the second best defensive record in the division as well.
Barry McHugh finished as the club’s top scorer on eight league goals nut has not found the net in his last six games.

Airdrie Preview – Will the Diamonds build on Saturday’s incredible victory and take a first leg lead?

The playoffs always tend to produce drama and that was certainly the case for Airdrie in the semi-final. A goal behind from the first leg, Ian Murray’s men were still favoured to overcome that deficit against Montrose – a team who finished 13 points below them. However, being 2-0 and 3-1 down in the second leg meant they were required to find three goals in the final 20 minutes. Airdrie then went on to win 6-4 after extra time and take the tie 6-5 on aggregate.

Murray now has the job to get his players focused on the two games which lie ahead as they attempt to end a 10 year spell of them being outside the Championship.

They were a match for champions Cove Rangers right up until the last couple of weeks and were undoubtedly the best of the rest. Their home record was particularly good with 12 wins from 18 games, but their away form was strong, too, taking 33 points from a possible 54.

Callum Gallagher and Callum Smith have been an excellent partnership in attack, scoring 27 goals between them. The latter of those helped himself to a hat-trick on Saturday against Montrose and has eight in his last 10 games.
