Luxembourg outfit, Racing Luxembourg, take on Romanian club, Viitorul at their Stade Achille Hammerel on Thursday night where the hosts will be looking to continue where they left off at the end of last season.
Racing won the Cup final against Hostert in what was a war of attrition with Racing showing great resilience and character to eventually lift the trophy and grab the silverware, but they had to do so with two players sent off and in a penalty shoot-out!
The home side will need to show their resilience again on Thursday night I fancy when they take on Viitorul, and as the hosts haven’t played a match of any kind since their Cup win at the end of May, this could further add to their problems here.
Onto Viitorul, and the visitors finished in fourth place in the Romanian Liga 1 in the second phase of the domestic season in the Championship Round which earned them a place in the Europa League qualifiers, but unlike Racing Luxembourg, Viitorul have been busy preparing for the new season.
Since their final day 1-0 defeat away at CFR Cluj back in May, Viitorul have played no fewer than seven pre-season matches which include wins over Zimbru, Spartakus Daleszyce, Jagiellonia Bialystok, Podbeskidzie and Radomiak Radom, and this game-time will no doubt be valuable as they look to hit the ground running in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.
Viitorul’s previous appearances in the Europa League haven’t been very successful though, as they’ve lost three of their four ties to date, but Racing Luxembourg’s record is even worse; they’ve played just two ties and lost 10-1 on aggregate to Kalmar back in 2008.
